The Burnt Offering

6:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2Command Aaron and his sons, saying: This is the Torah of the burnt offering: it is the burnt offering on the hearth upon the altar all the night until the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it.

3And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and linen breeches he shall put on upon his flesh; and he shall take up the ashes which the fire has consumed of the burnt offering upon the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar. 4And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes to outside the camp, to a clean place.

5And the fire upon the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not go out. And the priest shall kindle wood on it morning by morning, and he shall arrange upon it the burnt offering, and he shall make smoke upon it the fat of the peace offerings. 6Fire continually shall be kept burning upon the altar; it shall not go out.

The Grain Offering

7And this is the Torah of the meal offering: the sons of Aaron shall bring it near before the LORD, to the face of the altar. 8And he shall take up from it his handful, of the fine flour of the meal offering, and of its oil, and all the frankincense which is upon the meal offering, and he shall make smoke upon the altar a soothing aroma, its memorial portion, to the LORD.

9And that which is left of it Aaron and his sons shall eat; unleavened it shall be eaten in a holy place; in the court of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) they shall eat it. 10It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion from my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, like the sin offering and like the guilt offering. 11Every male among the sons of Aaron may eat it — an everlasting statute throughout your generations, from the offerings made by fire of the LORD; everyone who touches them shall be holy.

6:12And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 13This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which they shall bring near to the LORD in the day he is anointed: a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a continual meal offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening. 14On a griddle it shall be made with oil; soaked you shall bring it in; in baked pieces, a meal offering of pieces, you shall offer it, a soothing aroma to the LORD. 15And the priest, the anointed one in his place from among his sons, shall make it; an everlasting statute to the LORD — wholly it shall be made smoke. 16And every meal offering of a priest shall be wholly burnt; it shall not be eaten.

The Sin Offering

17And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 18Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying: This is the Torah of the sin offering. In the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, the sin offering shall be slaughtered before the LORD; it is most holy. 19The priest who offers it as a sin offering shall eat it; in a holy place it shall be eaten, in the court of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed). 20Whatever touches its flesh shall be holy; and when any of its blood is sprinkled upon a garment, that on which it was sprinkled you shall wash in a holy place.

21And the earthen vessel in which it is boiled shall be broken; and if it is boiled in a bronze vessel, then it shall be scoured and rinsed in water. 22Every male among the priests may eat it; it is most holy. 23And every sin offering, of whose blood is brought into the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) to make atonement in the holy place, shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire.

The Guilt Offering

7:1And this is the Torah of the guilt offering: it is most holy. 2In the place where they slaughter the burnt offering they shall slaughter the guilt offering, and its blood he shall dash upon the altar round about. 3And all his fat he shall offer of him: the fat tail, and the fat that covers the inwards, 4and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the lobe on the liver, upon the kidneys he shall remove it. 5And the priest shall make them smoke upon the altar, an offering made by fire to the LORD; it is a guilt offering. 6Every male among the priests may eat it; in a holy place it shall be eaten; it is most holy.

7Like the sin offering, like the guilt offering, one Torah is for them; the priest who makes atonement with it, to him it shall be. 8And the priest who offers the burnt offering of a man, the skin of the burnt offering which he has offered — to the priest, to him it shall be. 9And every meal offering that is baked in the oven, and all that is prepared in the pan, and on the griddle, shall be the priest's who offers it; to him it shall be. 10And every meal offering mingled with oil or dry shall be for all the sons of Aaron, each man like his brother.

The Peace Offering

7:11And this is the Torah of the sacrifice of the peace offerings which one offers to the LORD. 12If for a thanksgiving he offers it, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and fine flour well-soaked, cakes mingled with oil.

13With cakes of leavened bread he shall present his offering, with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings. 14And he shall present from it one out of each offering, a heave offering to the LORD; to the priest who dashes the blood of the peace offerings, to him it shall be. 15And the flesh of the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings shall be eaten on the day of his offering; he shall not leave any of it until morning.

16And if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow or a freewill offering, on the day he offers his sacrifice it shall be eaten, and on the next day that which is left of it may be eaten. 17And that which is left of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire. 18And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is at all eaten on the third day, it shall not be accepted; the one who offers it, it shall not be reckoned to him; it shall be a foul thing; and the soul that eats of it shall bear its iniquity.

19And the flesh that touches anything unclean shall not be eaten; with fire it shall be burnt. But the flesh, everyone who is clean may eat flesh. 20And the soul that eats flesh from the sacrifice of the peace offerings which is to the LORD, with his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from its peoples. 21And a soul, when it touches anything unclean — the uncleanness of man, or an unclean beast, or any unclean detestable thing — and eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of the peace offerings which is to the LORD, that soul shall be cut off from its peoples.

Fat and Blood Forbidden

22And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 23Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: You shall not eat any fat of ox or sheep or goat. 24And the fat of a carcass, and the fat of that which is torn, may be used for any work, but you shall surely not eat it.

25For everyone who eats the fat of the beast, of which one offers an offering made by fire to the LORD, the soul that eats it shall be cut off from its peoples. 26And you shall not eat any blood in all your dwellings, whether of bird or of beast. 27Any soul that eats any blood, that soul shall be cut off from its peoples.

The Priests’ Portion

28And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 29Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: He who offers his sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD shall bring his offering to the LORD from his sacrifice of peace offerings. 30His own hands shall bring the offerings made by fire of the LORD; the fat upon the breast he shall bring, the breast, to wave it as a wave offering before the LORD.

31And the priest shall make the fat smoke upon the altar, and the breast shall be Aaron's and his sons'. 32And the right thigh you shall give as a heave offering to the priest, from your sacrifices of peace offerings. 33He among the sons of Aaron who offers the blood of the peace offerings and the fat, to him shall be the right thigh for a portion.

34For the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the sons of Israel out of their sacrifices of peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as an everlasting statute from the sons of Israel.

35This is the anointing portion of Aaron and the anointing portion of his sons, from the offerings made by fire of the LORD, in the day he brought them near to minister as priests to the LORD. 36which the LORD commanded to give to them in the day he anointed them, from the sons of Israel — an everlasting statute throughout their generations.

37This is the Torah for the burnt offering, for the meal offering, and for the sin offering, and for the guilt offering, and for the consecration offering, and for the sacrifice of the peace offerings, 38which the LORD commanded Moses in Mount Sinai, in the day he commanded the sons of Israel to bring near their offerings to the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai.

Moses Consecrates Aaron and His Sons

8:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2"Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the oil of anointing, and the bull of the sin-offering, and the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread; 3and assemble all the congregation to the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed)."

4And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; and the congregation was assembled to the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed). 5And Moses said to the congregation, "This is the thing which the LORD commanded to be done."

6And Moses brought near Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water. 7And he put on him the tunic, and girded him with the sash, and clothed him with the robe, and put on him the ephod, and girded him with the band of the ephod, and bound it on him with it. 8And he placed on him the breastplate; and into the breastplate he put the Urim and the Thummim. 9And he placed the mitre on his head; and on the mitre, toward the front of his face, he placed the plate of gold, the crown of holiness; as the LORD commanded Moses.

10And Moses took the oil of anointing, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and sanctified them. 11And he sprinkled from it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its vessels, and the laver and its base, to sanctify them.

12And he poured from the oil of anointing on Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him. 13And Moses brought near the sons of Aaron, and clothed them with tunics, and girded them with sashes, and bound caps on them; as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Priests’ Sin Offering

8:14And he brought near the bull of the sin-offering; and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin-offering. 15And he slaughtered him; and Moses took the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar; and the blood he poured out at the base of the altar, and sanctified it, to make atonement for it.

16And he took all the fat that was on the inwards, and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat; and Moses made it smoke on the altar. 17But the bull, and its skin, and its flesh, and its dung, he burned with fire outside the camp; as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Priests’ Burnt Offering

18And he brought near the ram of the burnt-offering; and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 19And he slaughtered him; and Moses dashed the blood on the altar round about. 20And the ram he cut into its pieces; and Moses made the head, and the pieces, and the suet smoke. 21And the inwards and the legs he washed with water; and Moses made the whole ram smoke on the altar; it was a burnt-offering for a soothing aroma, it was a fire-offering to the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Ram of Ordination

8:22And he brought near the second ram, the ram of consecration; and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23And he slaughtered him; and Moses took from his blood, and put it on the tip of Aaron's right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the great toe of his right foot. 24And he brought near the sons of Aaron, and Moses put from the blood on the tip of their right ear, and on the thumb of their right hand, and on the great toe of their right foot; and Moses dashed the blood on the altar round about.

25And he took the fat, and the fat tail, and all the fat that was on the inwards, and the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right thigh. 26And from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the LORD he took one unleavened cake, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat, and on the right thigh. 27And he put the whole on the palms of Aaron, and on the palms of his sons, and waved them as a wave-offering before the LORD.

28And Moses took them from on their palms, and made them smoke on the altar on the burnt-offering; they were consecration offerings for a soothing aroma, it was a fire-offering to the LORD. 29And Moses took the breast, and waved it as a wave-offering before the LORD; from the ram of consecration it was for Moses as a portion; as the LORD commanded Moses.

7Reading 7 Leviticus 8:30–36Chapter page with footnotes →

8:30And Moses took from the oil of anointing, and from the blood that was on the altar, and sprinkled on Aaron, on his garments, and on his sons, and on his sons' garments with him; and he sanctified Aaron, his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

31And Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, "Boil the flesh at the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed); and there you shall eat it and the bread that is in the basket of consecration, as I commanded, saying, 'Aaron and his sons shall eat it.' 32And that which remains of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn with fire.

33And from the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) you shall not go out for seven days, until the day of the fulfilling of the days of your consecration; for seven days he shall fill your hand. 34As he did on this day, so the LORD commanded to do, to make atonement for you. 35And at the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) you shall dwell day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that you do not die; for so I am commanded."

36And Aaron and his sons did all the things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

Prophets (Haftarah) Jeremiah 7:21–8:3, Jeremiah 9:22–23

PJeremiah 7:21–8:3Chapter page with footnotes →

7:21Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat flesh. 22For I did not speak with your fathers, nor command them, in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning matters of burnt offering and sacrifice. 23But this thing I commanded them, saying: Hear My voice, and I will be to you for God, and you shall be to Me for a people; and walk in all the way that I command you, in order that it may be well with you.

24But they did not hear, and they did not incline their ear, but walked in the counsels, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward and not forward. 25From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I sent to you all My servants the prophets, daily, rising early and sending; 26but they did not hear Me, and they did not incline their ear, but stiffened their neck; they did worse than their fathers.

27And you shall speak to them all these words, but they will not hear you; and you shall call to them, but they will not answer you. 28And you shall say to them: This is the nation that did not hear the voice of the LORD its God, nor received correction; faithfulness has perished and is cut off from their mouth. 29Cut off your consecrated hair and cast it away, and lift up a lamentation on the bare heights; for the LORD has rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath.

The Valley of Slaughter

30For the sons of Judah have done the evil in My eyes, declares the LORD; they have set their detestable things in the house upon which My name is called, to defile it. 31And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, nor did it come up upon My heart.

32Therefore behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, when it shall no more be called Topheth, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter; for they shall bury in Topheth, for lack of room. 33And the carcass of this people shall be food for the bird of the heavens and for the beast of the earth; and none shall frighten them away.

34And I will make to shabbat, from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land shall become a waste.

Judah’s Sin and Punishment

8:1At that time, declares the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of its princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, from their graves; 2and they shall spread them out to the sun, and to the moon, and to all the host of the heavens, which they have loved and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and which they have sought, and to which they have bowed down; they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; for dung upon the face of the ground they shall be. 3And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the remnant that remain of this evil family, who remain in all the places where I have driven them, declares the LORD of hosts.

9:22Thus says the LORD: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, and let not the mighty man glory in his might; let not the rich man glory in his riches.

23But in this let him who glories glory: in understanding and knowing Me, that I am the LORD, doing lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth; for in these I delight, declares the LORD.
