Aaron’s First Offerings

9:1And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; 2and he said to Aaron, "Take for yourself a calf, a son of the herd, for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and bring them near before the LORD. 3And to the sons of Israel you shall speak, saying, 'Take a he-goat of the goats for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, sons of a year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; 4and an ox and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meal-offering mingled with oil; for today the LORD appears to you.'"

5And they took that which Moses commanded to the front of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed); and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD. 6And Moses said, "This is the thing which the LORD commanded that you should do; that the glory of the LORD may appear to you."

7And Moses said to Aaron, "Draw near to the altar, and offer your sin-offering and your burnt-offering, and make atonement for yourself and for the people; and offer the offering of the people, and make atonement for them; as the LORD commanded."

8And Aaron drew near to the altar, and slaughtered the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. 9And the sons of Aaron brought near the blood to him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar; and the blood he poured out at the base of the altar. 10But the fat, and the kidneys, and the lobe from the liver of the sin-offering, he made smoke on the altar; as the LORD commanded Moses. 11And the flesh and the skin he burned with fire outside the camp.

12And he slaughtered the burnt-offering; and the sons of Aaron delivered to him the blood, and he dashed it on the altar round about. 13And the burnt-offering they delivered to him by his pieces, and the head; and he made them smoke on the altar. 14And he washed the inwards and the legs, and made them smoke on the burnt-offering on the altar.

15And he brought near the offering of the people, and took the goat of the sin-offering which was for the people, and slaughtered it, and offered it for sin, as the first.

16And he brought near the burnt-offering, and offered it according to the judgment.

9:17And he brought near the meal-offering, and filled his palm from it, and made it smoke on the altar; besides the burnt-offering of the morning.

18And he slaughtered the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace-offerings which was for the people; and the sons of Aaron delivered to him the blood, and he dashed it on the altar round about,

19and the fat from the ox, and from the ram, the fat tail, and that which covers the inwards, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver; 20and they placed the fat on the breasts; and he made the fat smoke on the altar. 21And the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved as a wave-offering before the LORD; as Moses commanded.

22And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings.

23And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people.

9:24And fire came out from before the LORD, and consumed on the altar the burnt-offering and the fat; and all the people saw, and they shouted, and fell on their faces.

The Sin of Nadab and Abihu

10:1And the sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, took each man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on it, and brought near before the LORD strange fire, which he had not commanded them. 2And fire came out from before the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

3And Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke, saying, 'Through those near to me I will be sanctified, and before the face of all the people I will be glorified.'" And Aaron was silent.

4And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, "Draw near, carry your brothers from before the holy place to outside the camp." 5And they drew near, and carried them in their tunics to outside the camp, as Moses had spoken.

6And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, "Do not let your heads go loose, and do not tear your garments, that you do not die, and that he be not wroth with all the congregation; but your brothers, the whole house of Israel, shall bewail the burning which the LORD has burned. 7And from the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) you shall not go out, lest you die; for the oil of the anointing of the LORD is on you." And they did according to the word of Moses.

Restrictions for Priests

8And the LORD spoke to Aaron, saying: 9"Wine and strong drink you shall not drink, you and your sons with you, when you go into the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), that you do not die; it is a statute forever throughout your generations; 10and to make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; 11and to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them by the hand of Moses."

10:12And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons that were left, "Take the meal-offering that remains from the fire-offerings of the LORD, and eat it unleavened beside the altar; for it is most holy. 13And you shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your statute and the statute of your sons, from the fire-offerings of the LORD; for so I am commanded.

14And the breast of the wave-offering and the thigh of the heave-offering you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for as your statute and the statute of your sons they are given, from the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the sons of Israel. 15The thigh of the heave-offering and the breast of the wave-offering, on the fire-offerings of the fat they shall bring, to wave as a wave-offering before the LORD; and it shall be for you and for your sons with you, for a statute forever, as the LORD commanded."

10:16And the goat of the sin-offering Moses diligently sought, and behold, it was burned; and he was wroth with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron that were left, saying: 17"Why did you not eat the sin-offering in the place of the holy, since it is most holy, and he gave it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? 18Behold, its blood was not brought into the holy place within; you should surely have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded."

19And Aaron spoke to Moses, "Behold, this day they brought near their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before the LORD, and such things as these have befallen me; and if I had eaten a sin-offering today, would it have been good in the eyes of the LORD?"

20And Moses heard, and it was good in his eyes.

Clean and Unclean Animals

11:1And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them: 2Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: This is the living thing which you may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. 3Everything that parts the hoof, and is cleft, splitting the clefts of the hooves, bringing up the cud, among the beasts, that you may eat.

4Only this you shall not eat, of those that bring up the cud, and of those that part the hoof: the camel, because it brings up the cud but it does not part the hoof, it is unclean to you.

5And the rock-badger, because it brings up the cud but it does not part the hoof, it is unclean to you.

6And the hare, because it brings up the cud but it does not part the hoof, it is unclean to you.

7And the swine, because it parts the hoof and is cleft, splitting the cleft, but it does not ruminate the cud, it is unclean to you.

8Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean to you.

9This you may eat of all that are in the waters: everything that has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them you may eat.

10And all that have no fins and scales in the seas and in the rivers, of all that swarm in the waters, and of every living soul that is in the waters, they are a detestable thing to you. 11And they shall be a detestable thing to you; of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall hold in detestation. 12Everything that has no fins nor scales in the waters, that is a detestable thing to you.

13And these you shall hold in detestation among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the eagle, and the bearded vulture, and the osprey;

14and the kite, and the falcon after its kind;

15every raven after its kind;

16and the daughter of the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and the hawk after its kind;

17and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl;

18and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the carrion-vulture;

19and the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

20Every swarming thing of the birds that goes upon all fours is a detestable thing to you. 21Only this you may eat of every swarming thing of the birds that goes upon all fours, which has jointed legs above its feet, with which to leap upon the earth; 22These of them you may eat: the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind. 23But every swarming thing of the birds which has four feet is a detestable thing to you.

24And by these you shall become unclean; everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean before(ad עד) the evening. 25And everyone who carries any of their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean before(ad עד) the evening.

26For every beast which parts the hoof but is not cleft in clefts, nor brings up the cud, they are unclean to you; everyone who touches them shall be unclean.

27And everything that goes upon its paws, among every living thing that goes upon all fours, they are unclean to you; everyone who touches their carcass shall be unclean before(ad עד) the evening. 28And he who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean before(ad עד) the evening; they are unclean to you.

29And this is the unclean to you among the swarming things that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kind, 30and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon.

31These are the unclean to you among all that swarm; everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean before(ad עד) the evening. 32And everything upon which any of them falls when they are dead shall be unclean, whether any vessel of wood, or garment, or skin, or sack, any vessel with which work is done, it shall be put into water, and it shall be unclean before(ad עד) the evening; then it shall be clean.

7Reading 7 Leviticus 11:33–47Chapter page with footnotes →

11:33And every earthen vessel into whose midst any of them falls, everything that is in its midst shall be unclean, and it you shall break. 34Of all the food which may be eaten, that on which water comes shall be unclean; and all drink which may be drunk in any vessel shall be unclean.

35And everything upon which any of their carcass falls shall be unclean; an oven or a stove shall be broken down; they are unclean, and they shall be unclean to you. 36Only a spring or a cistern, a gathering of water, shall be clean; but he who touches their carcass shall be unclean. 37And if any of their carcass falls upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean. 38But if water is put upon the seed, and any of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.

39And if any of the beasts which is for you to eat dies, he who touches its carcass shall be unclean before(ad עד) the evening. 40And he who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; and he who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.

41And every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth is a detestable thing; it shall not be eaten. 42Everything that goes upon the belly, and everything that goes upon all fours, up to everything that has many feet, of all the swarming things that swarm upon the earth, you shall not eat them; for they are a detestable thing.

43Do not make your souls detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, and do not make yourselves unclean with them, that you should be made unclean by them. 44For I am the LORD your God; and you shall sanctify yourselves, and you shall be holy, for I am holy; and you shall not defile your souls with any swarming thing that creeps upon the earth. 45For I am the LORD who brings you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; and you shall be holy, for I am holy.

46This is the Torah of the beast, and of the bird, and of every living soul that moves in the waters, and of every soul that swarms upon the earth; 47to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.

David Fetches the Ark

6:1And David again gathered every chosen man in Israel, thirty thousand. 2And David arose and went, and all the people who were with him, from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD of hosts who sits upon the cherubim.

3And they made the ark of God ride upon a new cart, and brought it from the house of Abinadab that was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart. 4And they brought it from the house of Abinadab that was on the hill, with the ark of God; and Ahio went before the ark.

Uzzah Touches the Ark

5And David and all the house of Israel were playing before the LORD with all manner of cypress-wood instruments, and with harps, and with lyres, and with timbrels, and with sistrums, and with cymbals.

6And they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, and Uzzah reached out to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen had stumbled. 7And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him there for the error; and he died there beside the ark of God.

8And it was distressing to David, because the LORD had broken forth a breach against Uzzah; and he called that place Perez-uzzah, until this day.

9And David feared the LORD on that day, and said: "How shall the ark of the LORD come to me?" 10And David was not willing to remove the ark of the LORD to himself, into the city of David; and David turned it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11And the ark of the LORD dwelt in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months; and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his house.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

12And it was told to king David, saying: "The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that is his, because of the ark of God." And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with joy. 13And it came to pass, when the bearers of the ark of the LORD had stepped six paces, that he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.

14And David was whirling with all his might before the LORD; and David was girded with a linen ephod. 15And David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with a shout and with the sound of the horn.

Michal’s Contempt for David

16And it came to pass, as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out through the window, and saw king David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

17And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered up burnt offerings before the LORD, and peace offerings.

18And David finished offering up the burnt offering and the peace offerings, and he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. 19And he apportioned to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, from man to woman, to each man one cake of bread, and one portion, and one raisin-cake; and all the people went, each man to his house.

20And David returned to bless his house; and Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said: "How honored was the king of Israel today, who uncovered himself today before the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the empty ones shamelessly uncovers himself!"

21And David said to Michal: "Before the LORD, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of the LORD, over Israel — so I will play before the LORD. 22And I will be yet more lightly esteemed than this, and I will be lowly in my own eyes; but with the handmaids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be honored."

23And to Michal the daughter of Saul there was no child until the day of her death.

God’s Covenant with David

7:1And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies round about, 2that the king said to Nathan the prophet: "See now, I am dwelling in a house of cedars, but the ark of God is dwelling within the curtain."

3And Nathan said to the king: "All that is in your heart, go, do; for the LORD is with you."

4And it came to pass in that night, that the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying: 5"Go and say to my servant, to David: Thus says the LORD: Will you build for me a house for me to dwell in? 6For I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought up the children of Israel from Egypt, even to this day, but I have been walking about in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7In all that I walked about among all the children of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying: Why have you not built for me a house of cedars?

8And now, thus you shall say to my servant, to David: Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from after the flock, to be ruler over my people, over Israel. 9And I have been with you in all that you went, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you, and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones that are in the earth.

10And I will set a place for my people, for Israel, and I will plant them, and they shall dwell in their own place and tremble no more; and the sons of wickedness shall not continue to afflict them, as at the first, 11and from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. And the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make for you a house. 12When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your seed after you, who shall come forth from your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14I will be to him for a father, and he shall be to me for a son; whom, when he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of man;

15but my mercy shall not depart from him, as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before you; your throne shall be established forever."

17According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
