Summary

Moses speaks the song: the Rock whose work is perfect, Israel's ingratitude, the LORD's discipline and His final vindication of His people: "Shout for joy, O nations, with his people!" Moses urges them to take these words to heart, and is told to go up Mount Nebo to see the land.

The Song of Moses

32:1Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

2My teaching will drop as the rain, my speech will distill as the dew, as fine rain upon the grass, and as showers upon the herb.

3For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; ascribe greatness to our God.

4The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are judgment; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is he.

5He has acted corruptly toward him; not his sons, their blemish; a generation crooked and twisted.

6Do you thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and not wise? Is he not your father who acquired you? He made you and established you.

2Reading 2 Deuteronomy 32:7–12Chapter page with footnotes →

32:7Remember the days of old, consider the years of generation upon generation; ask your father, and he will tell you, your elders, and they will say to you.

8When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.

9For the portion of the LORD is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

10He found him in a land of wilderness, and in a waste, a howling desert; he encompassed him, he gave him understanding, he guarded him as the pupil of his eye.

11As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreads its wings, takes them, bears them upon its pinions —

12The LORD alone led him, and there was no foreign god with him.

3Reading 3 Deuteronomy 32:13–18Chapter page with footnotes →

32:13He made him ride upon the high places of the earth, and he ate the produce of the field; and he made him suck honey out of the crag, and oil out of the flint of the rock;

14curd of cattle and milk of the flock, with fat of lambs and rams, sons of Bashan, and he-goats, with the fat of the kidneys of wheat; and the blood of the grape you drank as foaming wine.

15And Jeshurun grew fat and kicked — you grew fat, you grew thick, you became gross — and he abandoned God who made him, and he treated as foolish the Rock of his salvation (Yeshuah).

16They roused him to jealousy with strangers; with abominations they provoked him.

17They sacrificed to demons, not God, gods they did not know, new ones who came lately, whom your fathers did not dread.

18The Rock who bore you, you neglected, and you forgot God who brought you forth.

4Reading 4 Deuteronomy 32:19–28Chapter page with footnotes →

32:19And the LORD saw and spurned, from the provocation of his sons and his daughters.

20And he said: "I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end will be; for they are a generation of perversities, sons in whom is no faithfulness.

21They, they roused me to jealousy with a not-god, they provoked me with their vanities; and I, I will rouse them to jealousy with a not-people, with a foolish nation I will provoke them.

22For a fire has been kindled in my anger, and it burns to the lowest Sheol, and it devours the earth and its produce, and it sets ablaze the foundations of the mountains.

23I will heap evils upon them; my arrows I will spend upon them.

24Wasted with hunger, and consumed with burning heat and bitter destruction; and the tooth of beasts I will send upon them, with the venom of crawlers of the dust.

25From outside the sword will bereave, and from the chambers terror; both young man and virgin, the suckling with the man of gray hair.

26I said, 'I will dash them in pieces, I will make their memory cease from mankind,'

27were it not that I dreaded the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries misjudge, lest they say, 'Our hand is exalted, and it was not the LORD who did all this.'

28For they are a nation lost of counsel, and there is no understanding in them.

5Reading 5 Deuteronomy 32:29–39Chapter page with footnotes →

32:29If they were wise, they would understand this, they would discern their latter end.

30How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?

31For their rock is not as our Rock; even our enemies being judges.

32For their vine is from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison, their clusters are bitter.

33The venom of great sea-creatures is their wine, and the cruel poison of asps.

34Is not this stored up with me, sealed in my treasuries?

35Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot slips; for the day of their calamity is near, and the things prepared for them make haste.

36For the LORD will judge his people, and concerning his servants he will relent, when he sees that the hand is gone, and there is no one shut up or left.

37And he will say, 'Where are their gods, the rock in whom they trusted,

38who ate the fat of their sacrifices, who drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you; let them be a hiding place over you.

39See now that I, I am he, and there is no God with me; I, I kill, and I make alive; I have wounded, and I, I heal; and there is none who delivers from my hand.

6Reading 6 Deuteronomy 32:40–43Chapter page with footnotes →

32:40For I lift up my hand to the heavens, and I say, 'As I live forever,

41if I sharpen the lightning of my sword, and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will return vengeance to my adversaries, and to those who hate me I will recompense.

42I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword will devour flesh; from the blood of the slain and the captive, from the head of the leaders of the enemy.'

43Shout for joy, O nations, with his people! For he will avenge the blood of his servants, and render vengeance to his adversaries, and atone for his land, his people.

32:44And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Hoshea the son of Nun. 45And Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel. 46And he said to them: "Set your heart to all the words which I am testifying against you this day, which you shall command your sons to observe to do, all the words of this Torah. 47For it is not an empty word from you; for it is your life; and through this word you shall prolong days upon the ground which you are crossing the Jordan there to possess it."

Moses’ Death Foretold

48And the LORD spoke to Moses on that very same day, saying: 49"Go up to this mountain of Abarim, mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, which is over against Jericho; and see the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession;

50and die on the mountain where you are going up, and be gathered to your peoples, as Aaron your brother died on mount Hor and was gathered to his peoples;

51because you trespassed against me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribath-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because you did not sanctify me in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52For from opposite you shall see the land, but there you shall not enter, into the land which I am giving to the sons of Israel."

David’s Song of Deliverance

22:1And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2And he said: the LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer for me;

3God of my rock, in him I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation (Yeshuah), my high tower and my refuge, my savior — from violence you save me.

4Praised, I call to the LORD, and from my enemies I am saved.

5For the breakers of death surrounded me; the torrents of belial terrified me.

6The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me.

7In my distress I call to the LORD, and to my God I call; and he hears my voice from his temple, and my cry comes into his ears.

8And the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and were shaken, because he was angry.

9Smoke went up in his nostrils, and fire from his mouth devoured; coals were kindled from it.

10And he bowed the heavens and came down, and thick darkness was under his feet.

11And he rode upon a cherub and flew; and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.

12And he set darkness around him as booths, a gathering of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

13From the brightness before him coals of fire were kindled.

14The LORD thundered from the heavens, and the Most High gave forth his voice.

15And he sent out arrows and scattered them, lightning and confounded them.

16And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were laid bare, by the rebuke of the LORD, from the breath of the wind of his nostrils.

17He sends from on high, he takes me; he draws me out of many waters.

18He delivers me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too mighty for me.

19They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was a support for me.

20And he brought me out into a broad place; he delivers me, because he delighted in me.

21The LORD deals with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he repays me.

22For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not acted wickedly against my God.

23For all his judgments are before me; and his statutes, I do not turn aside from them.

24And I was blameless toward him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.

25And the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness before his eyes.

26With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless mighty man you show yourself blameless;

27with the pure you show yourself pure, and with the crooked you show yourself perverse.

28And an afflicted people you save; but your eyes are upon the haughty, that you may bring them down.

29For you are my lamp, O LORD; and the LORD lightens my darkness.

30For by you I run upon a troop; by my God I leap over a wall.

31God — his way is blameless; the word of the LORD is refined; he is a shield to all who take refuge in him.

32For who is God except the LORD? And who is a rock except our God?

33God is my strong fortress, and he sets my way free, blameless;

34making my feet like the hinds', and upon my high places he makes me stand;

35training my hands for war, and my arms bend a bow of bronze.

36And you gave me the shield of your salvation (Yeshuah), and your humility makes me great.

37You enlarge my step under me, and my ankles do not slip.

38I pursue my enemies and destroy them, and I do not turn back until they are consumed.

39And I consume them and shatter them, and they do not rise; and they fall under my feet.

40And you gird me with strength for war; you bow down under me those who rise against me.

41And my enemies — you have given me the neck; those who hate me, I cut them off.

42They look, but there is none saving; to the LORD, but he did not answer them.

43And I beat them small as the dust of the earth; as the mire of the streets I crush them, I tread them down.

44And you deliver me from the strivings of my people; you keep me as the head of nations; a people I did not know serve me.

45The sons of the foreigner cringe to me; at the hearing of the ear they obey me.

46The sons of the foreigner wither, and come trembling out of their strongholds.

47The LORD lives, and blessed is my rock; and exalted is the God of the rock of my salvation (Yeshuah).

48The God who gives vengeances to me, and brings down peoples under me;

49and who brings me out from my enemies; and above those who rise against me you lift me up; from the man of violences you deliver me.

50Therefore I give thanks to you, O LORD, among the nations, and to your name I sing praises.

51A tower of salvations (Yeshuah) is his king; and showing lovingkindness to his anointed, to David and to his seed, forever.

15:8For I say that Messiah Yeshua has become a servant of the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God, to confirm the promises given to the fathers, 9and for the nations to glorify God for His mercy — just as it is written: "Therefore I will confess You among the nations, and I will sing praise to Your name."

10And again it says: "Rejoice, O nations, with His people."

11And again: "Praise the Lord, all you nations, and let all the peoples extol Him."

12And again Isaiah says: "The root of Jesse will come — even He who rises to rule the nations; in Him the nations will hope."

13Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the holy spirit.
