Torah Deuteronomy 29:9–30:20

1Reading 1 Deuteronomy 29:9–11Chapter page with footnotes →

29:9You are standing this day, all of you, before the LORD your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, every man of Israel, 10your little ones, your wives, and your sojourner who is in the midst of your camp, from the hewer of your wood to the drawer of your water; 11for your passing into the covenant of the LORD your God, and into His oath, which the LORD your God is cutting with you this day;

2Reading 2 Deuteronomy 29:12–14Chapter page with footnotes →

29:12in order to establish you this day to Himself for a people, and that He may be to you for God, as He spoke to you, and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

13And not with you alone do I cut this covenant and this oath; 14but with him who is here with us, standing this day before the LORD our God, and with him who is not here with us this day —

3Reading 3 Deuteronomy 29:15–28Chapter page with footnotes →

29:15for you know how we dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed; 16and you saw their detestable things, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were with them —

17lest there be among you a man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turns this day from the LORD our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there be among you a root bearing gall and wormwood; 18and it shall be, when he hears the words of this oath, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying: 'Peace shall be to me, though in the stubbornness of my heart I walk' — in order to sweep away the watered with the dry. 19The LORD will not be willing to pardon him, for then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the oath written in this book will lie upon him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under the heavens. 20And the LORD will separate him for evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the oaths of the covenant written in this book of the Torah.

21And the latter generation will say — your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land — when they see the plagues of that land, and its sicknesses with which the LORD has made it sick; 22brimstone and salt, a burning, is all its land; it is not sown, and it does not sprout, and no herb grows up in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and in His wrath —

23and all the nations will say: 'For what reason has the LORD done thus to this land? What is the heat of this great anger?'

24And they will say: 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He cut with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt; 25and they went and served other gods, and bowed down to them, gods that they did not know, and that He had not allotted to them; 26and the anger of the LORD was kindled against that land, to bring upon it all the curse written in this book; 27and the LORD plucked them from off their ground in anger, and in wrath, and in great fury, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.'

28The hidden things belong to the LORD our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, to do all the words of this Torah.

The Promise of Restoration

30:1And it shall be, when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you bring it back to your heart among all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you, 2and you return to the LORD your God, and hearken to His voice, according to all that I am commanding you this day, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul; 3then the LORD your God will turn your captivity, and have compassion on you, and will return and gather you from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. 4If your outcast be at the end of the heavens, from there the LORD your God will gather you, and from there He will take you.

5And the LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will do you good, and multiply you above your fathers. 6And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, for the sake of your life.

5Reading 5 Deuteronomy 30:7–10Chapter page with footnotes →

30:7And the LORD your God will put all these oaths upon your enemies, and upon those who hate you, who persecuted you. 8And you will return and hearken to the voice of the LORD, and do all His commandments which I am commanding you this day. 9And the LORD your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your belly, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, for good; for the LORD will again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your fathers; 10if you hearken to the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the Torah; if you return to the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul.

The Choice of Life or Death

30:11For this commandment which I am commanding you this day, it is not too wonderful for you, nor is it far off. 12It is not in the heavens, saying: 'Who will go up for us to the heavens, and take it for us, and make us hear it, that we may do it?' 13And it is not beyond the sea, saying: 'Who will pass over for us to beyond the sea, and take it for us, and make us hear it, that we may do it?' 14But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.

7Reading 7 Deuteronomy 30:15–20Chapter page with footnotes →

30:15See, I have set before you this day the life and the good, and the death and the evil, 16in that I am commanding you this day to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments; then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God shall bless you in the land where you are going to possess it.

17But if your heart turns, and you do not hearken, and you are drawn away, and bow down to other gods, and serve them; 18I declare to you this day that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days upon the ground which you are passing over the Jordan to go there to possess it.

19I call to witness against you this day the heavens and the earth: the life and the death I have set before you, the blessing and the curse; therefore choose in the life, that you may live, you and your seed; 20to love the LORD your God, to hearken to His voice, and to cleave to Him; for He is your life and the length of your days; that you may dwell upon the ground which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them."

Prophets (Haftarah) Isaiah 61:10–63:9

PIsaiah 61:10–63:9Chapter page with footnotes →

61:10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, with the robe of righteousness he has covered me, as a bridegroom decks himself as a priest with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her ornaments.

11For as the earth brings forth its sprout, and as a garden makes its sowings spring up; so the Lord GOD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all the nations.

Zion’s Salvation and New Name

62:1For Zion's sake I will not be silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation (Yeshuah) as a torch that burns.

2And nations shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall designate.

3And you shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the palm of your God.

4It shall no more be said of you, Forsaken, and of your land it shall no more be said, Desolate; but you shall be called, My delight is in her, and your land, Espoused; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be espoused.

5For as a young man espouses a virgin, your sons shall espouse you; and as a bridegroom rejoices over a bride, your God shall rejoice over you.

6Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; all the day and all the night continually they shall not be silent. You who remind the LORD, let there be no silence for you,

7and give no silence to him, until he establishes and until he makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.

8The LORD has sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength: Surely I will no more give your grain as food to your enemies, and the sons of the foreigner shall not drink your new wine for which you have labored;

9but those who gather it shall eat it and praise the LORD, and those who collect it shall drink it in the courts of my sanctuary.

10Pass through, pass through the gates, clear the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway, gather out from the stones, lift up a standard over the peoples.

11Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your salvation (Yeshuah) comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.

12And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD; and you shall be called, Sought out, a city not forsaken.

God’s Vengeance on the Nations

63:1Who is this who comes from Edom, with crimsoned garments from Bozrah? This one majestic in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? "It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save."

2"Why is there red on your apparel, and your garments like one who treads in the winevat?"

3"A winepress I have trodden alone, and from the peoples there was no man with me; and I trod them in my anger, and I trampled them in my fury; and their lifeblood spattered on my garments, and I stained all my raiment.

4For a day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed has come.

5And I looked, and there was none helping, and I was astonished, and there was none upholding; therefore my own arm saved me, and my fury, it upheld me.

6And I trod down peoples in my anger, and made them drunk in my fury, and I brought down their lifeblood to the earth."

God’s Mercies Recalled

7The kindnesses of the LORD I will make mention, the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD has bestowed on us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel, which he bestowed on them according to his compassions, and according to the abundance of his kindnesses.

8And he said, "Surely they are my people, sons who will not deal falsely"; and he became to them a Savior.

9In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them, and he lifted them up and bore them all the days of old.

Apostolic Writings Romans 10:5–13

ARomans 10:5–13Chapter page with footnotes →

10:5For Moses writes concerning the righteousness that is by the law: "The person who does these things shall live by them." 6But the righteousness that is by faith speaks thus: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" — that is, to bring Messiah down — 7"or, 'Who will descend into the abyss?'" — that is, to bring Messiah up from the dead.

8But what does it say? "The word is near you — in your mouth and in your heart" — that is, the word of faith which we proclaim: 9that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Yeshua and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses resulting in Salvation.

11For the scripture says: "Everyone who believes in Him will not be put to shame." 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is Lord over all, abounding in riches to all who call upon Him; 13for "everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved."
