3And they journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the Passover the sons of Israel went out with a high hand in the eyes of all Egypt. 4And the Egyptians were burying those whom the LORD had smitten among them, every firstborn; and upon their gods the LORD executed judgments. 5And the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses, and encamped in Succoth.

Instructions for Occupying Canaan
33:50And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying: 51"Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 52then you shall dispossess all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their figured stones, and all their molten images you shall destroy, and all their high places you shall demolish.
53And you shall take possession of the land, and dwell in it; for to you I have given the land to possess it. 54And you shall inherit the land by lot according to your families — to the many you shall increase his inheritance, and to the few you shall diminish his inheritance; wherever the lot comes out for him, there it shall be his; according to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit.
55But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those whom you let remain of them shall be as thorns in your eyes, and as pricks in your sides, and they shall harass you upon the land in which you dwell. 56And it shall come to pass, that as I thought to do to them, so will I do to you."
The Boundaries of Canaan
34:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2Command the children of Israel, and say to them: When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, the land of Canaan according to its borders.
3And your south side shall be from the wilderness of Zin alongside Edom, and your south border shall be from the end of the Salt Sea eastward; 4And your border shall turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass over to Zin, and its goings out shall be from the south to Kadesh-barnea; and it shall go forth to Hazar-addar, and pass over to Azmon; 5And the border shall turn from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and its goings out shall be at the sea.
6And as the western border, you shall have the Great Sea for a border; this shall be your western border.
7And this shall be your north border: from the Great Sea you shall mark out for yourselves mount Hor; 8From mount Hor you shall mark out to the entrance of Hamath; and the goings out of the border shall be at Zedad; 9And the border shall go forth to Ziphron, and its goings out shall be at Hazar-enan; this shall be your north border.
10And you shall mark out for yourselves for the east border from Hazar-enan to Shepham; 11And the border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall go down and strike upon the shoulder of the sea of Chinnereth eastward; 12And the border shall go down to the Jordan, and its goings out shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders round about.
13And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying: This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give to the nine tribes and to the half tribe; 14For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received, and the half tribe of Manasseh have received, their inheritance; 15The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise.

Forty-Eight Cities for the Levites
35:1And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying: 2Command the children of Israel, that they give to the Levites from the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and open land round about the cities you shall give to the Levites. 3And the cities shall be theirs to dwell in, and their open lands shall be for their cattle and for their goods and for all their beasts.
4And the open lands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about. 5And you shall measure outside the city: the east side two thousand cubits, and the south side two thousand cubits, and the west side two thousand cubits, and the north side two thousand cubits, with the city in the middle. This shall be to them the open lands of the cities.
6And the cities which you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the slayer to flee there; and beside them you shall give forty-two cities. 7All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities, them and their open lands. 8And the cities which you shall give from the possession of the children of Israel: from the many you shall give many, and from the few you shall give few; each man according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give of his cities to the Levites.

Six Cities of Refuge
35:9And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 10Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11Then you shall appoint for yourselves cities; cities of refuge they shall be for you, that a slayer who smites a soul by error may flee there. 12And the cities shall be for you for refuge from the redeemer, that the slayer die not until he stands before the congregation for judgment.
13And the cities which you shall give shall be six cities of refuge for you. 14Three cities you shall give beyond the Jordan, and three cities you shall give in the land of Canaan; cities of refuge they shall be. 15For the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the settler among them, these six cities shall be for refuge, that everyone who smites a soul by error may flee there.
16And if he smote him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a slayer; the slayer shall surely be put to death. 17And if he smote him with a stone of the hand, by which one may die, and he died, he is a slayer; the slayer shall surely be put to death. 18Or if he smote him with a weapon of wood of the hand, by which one may die, and he died, he is a slayer; the slayer shall surely be put to death.
19The redeemer of blood, he shall put the slayer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.
20And if he thrust him in hatred, or hurled at him by lying in wait, so that he died, 21Or in enmity smote him with his hand, so that he died; the smiter shall surely be put to death; he is a slayer; the redeemer of blood shall put the slayer to death when he meets him.
22But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled upon him any vessel without lying in wait, 23Or with any stone by which one may die, without seeing him, and cast it upon him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, and did not seek his harm; 24Then the congregation shall judge between the smiter and the redeemer of blood according to these judgments; 25And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the redeemer of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he had fled; and he shall dwell in it until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.
26But if the slayer at all goes out beyond the border of his city of refuge, where he had fled, 27And the redeemer of blood finds him outside the border of his city of refuge, and the redeemer of blood slays the slayer, there is no blood for him. 28For in his city of refuge he should dwell until the death of the high priest; and after the death of the high priest the slayer may return to the land of his possession. 29And these shall be for you for a statute of judgment throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
30Whoever smites a soul, at the mouth of witnesses shall the slayer be slain; but one witness shall not testify against a soul to die.
31And you shall take no ransom for the soul of a slayer who is wicked, to die; for he shall surely be put to death. 32And you shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, to return to dwell in the land until the death of the priest.
33And you shall not pollute the land in which you are; for blood, it pollutes the land, and for the land no atonement can be made for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of him who shed it. 34And you shall not defile the land in which you dwell, in the midst of which I dwell; for I, the LORD, dwell in the midst of the children of Israel.

Zelophehad’s Daughters Marry
36:1And the heads of the fathers came near, of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the children of Joseph; and they spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers of the children of Israel; 2And they said: the LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel; and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. 3And if they become wives to one of the sons of the tribes of the children of Israel, then their inheritance shall be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong; so it shall be taken away from the lot of our inheritance. 4And if it is the jubilee of the children of Israel, then their inheritance shall be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; and from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers their inheritance shall be taken away.
5And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the mouth of the LORD, saying: The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks rightly. 6This is the thing which the LORD commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying: Let them become wives to whoever is good in their eyes; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they become wives. 7And no inheritance of the children of Israel shall turn about from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall cleave, each man to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. 8And every daughter who possesses an inheritance from the tribes of the children of Israel shall become a wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may possess, each man the inheritance of his fathers. 9And no inheritance shall turn about from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall cleave, each man to its inheritance.
10As the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad. 11And Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, became wives to the sons of their uncles. 12From the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph they became wives, and their inheritance remained upon the tribe of the family of their father.
13These are the commandments and the judgments which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

PJeremiah 2:4–28Chapter page with footnotes →
2:4Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. 5Thus says the LORD: What injustice have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and have become vain?
6And they did not say, Where is the LORD who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and the shadow of death, in a land through which no man passed, and where no man dwelt?
7And I brought you into a land of the fruitful field, to eat its fruit and its goodness; but you came and defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.
8The priests did not say, Where is the LORD? And those who handle the Torah did not know me; and the shepherds transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
9Therefore I will yet contend with you, declares the LORD, and with your children's children will I contend.
10For pass over to the isles of the Kittim, and see; and send to Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there has been such a thing.
11Has a nation changed its gods, which are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.
12Be astonished, O heavens, at this, and shudder; be utterly desolate, declares the LORD.
13For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, to hew out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
The Consequence of Israel’s Sin
14Is Israel a servant? Is he a home-born slave? Why has he become a prey?
15Against him the young lions roar, they give out their voice; and they have made his land a desolation; his cities are burned, without inhabitant.
16Also the sons of Noph and Tahpanhes feed on the crown of your head.
17Have you not done this to yourself, in that you have forsaken the LORD your God, at the time he led you in the way?
18And now what have you to do with the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Shihor? Or what have you to do with the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?
19Your own evil shall correct you, and your backslidings shall reprove you; know therefore and see that it is evil and bitter that you have forsaken the LORD your God, and that my fear is not in you, declares the Lord GOD of hosts.
20For of old I broke your yoke, I burst your bands; and you said, I will not transgress; for upon every high hill and under every leafy tree you bowed down, playing the harlot.
21And I planted you a choice vine, wholly a seed of truth; how then have you turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine to me?
22For though you wash with natron, and use much soap, your iniquity is marked before me, declares the Lord GOD.
Israel’s Unfaithfulness
23How can you say, I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baalim? See your way in the valley, know what you have done; you are a swift young she-camel traversing her ways;
24a wild ass used to the wilderness, in the desire of her soul she snuffs up the wind; her lust—who can turn it back? All who seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
25Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst; but you said, There is no hope; no, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.
26As the shame of a thief when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,
27saying to a tree, You are my father, and to a stone, You brought me forth; for they have turned to me the back of the neck, and not the face; but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
28And where are your gods that you have made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble; for according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah.

6:17So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of His purpose, He interposed with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong comfort to hold fast to the hope set before us.
