The Command to Leave Horeb
1:1These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the Arabah, opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.
2Eleven days from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. 3And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, that Moses spoke to the sons of Israel according to all that the LORD had commanded him to them, 4after he had struck down Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.
5Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to expound this Torah, saying:
6The LORD our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, "Enough for you to dwell in this mountain. 7Turn and journey for yourselves, and come to the mountain of the Amorites and to all its neighbors, in the Arabah, in the mountain, and in the lowland, and in the Negev, and in the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and the Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
8See, I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them."

9And I said to you at that time, saying, "I am not able by myself alone to bear you. 10The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of the heavens for multitude.

1:11The LORD, the God of your fathers, may He add to you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you, as He has spoken to you! 12How can I by myself alone bear your trouble, and your burden, and your strife? 13Give for yourselves men wise and understanding and known to your tribes, and I will set them as your heads."
14And you answered me and said, "The thing which you have spoken is good to do."
15And I took the heads of your tribes, men wise and known, and I gave them as heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers for your tribes.
16And I commanded your judges at that time, saying, "Hear between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and his sojourner. 17You shall not recognize faces in judgment; you shall hear the small as the great; you shall not be afraid before the face of a man, for the judgment is God's. And the matter which is too hard for you, you shall bring near to me, and I will hear it."
18And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.
Twelve Spies Sent Out
19And we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that great and fearful wilderness which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20And I said to you, "You have come to the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving to us. 21See, the LORD your God has set the land before you. Go up, possess it, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Do not fear, and do not be dismayed."

1:22And you came near to me, all of you, and said, "Let us send men before us, and they shall search out for us the land, and bring us back word of the way by which we should go up, and the cities to which we shall come."
23And the thing was good in my eyes, and I took from you twelve men, one man for each tribe. 24And they turned and went up to the mountain, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25And they took in their hand of the fruit of the land, and brought it down to us, and brought us back word and said, "Good is the land which the LORD our God is giving to us."
Israel’s Rebellion
26But you were not willing to go up, and you rebelled against the mouth of the LORD your God. 27And you murmured in your tents and said, "Because the LORD hated us, He has brought us out from the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28Where are we going up? Our brothers have melted our heart, saying, 'A people greater and taller than we; cities great and fortified up to the heavens; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.'"
29And I said to you, "Do not be terrified, and do not fear them. 30The LORD your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all that He did with you in Egypt before your eyes, 31and in the wilderness, where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place."
32Yet in this thing you are not believing in the LORD your God, 33who goes before you in the way, to seek out for you a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to show you the way in which you should go, and in the cloud by day.
Israel’s Penalty
34And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and swore, saying, 35"Surely not a man among these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers, 36except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him I will give the land on which he has trodden, and to his sons, because he has wholly followed after the LORD."
37Also with me the LORD was angry for your sakes, saying, "You also shall not go in there. 38Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Strengthen him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

1:39And your little ones, of whom you said they would be for a prey, and your sons, who this day do not know good and evil, they shall go in there, and to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. 40But you, turn for yourselves and journey to the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds."
The Defeat at Hormah
41And you answered and said to me, "We have sinned against the LORD; we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us." And you girded on, every man, his weapons of war, and you deemed it light to go up to the mountain.
42And the LORD said to me, "Say to them, 'Do not go up, and do not fight, for I am not in your midst, lest you be struck before your enemies.'"
43And I spoke to you, and you did not hear; and you rebelled against the mouth of the LORD, and acted presumptuously, and went up to the mountain.
44And the Amorite who dwelt in that mountain came out to meet you, and chased you as the bees do, and beat you down in Seir, as far as Hormah. 45And you returned and wept before the LORD, but the LORD did not hear your voice, and did not give ear to you.
46And you dwelt in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you dwelt there.
Wanderings in the Wilderness
2:1And we turned and journeyed to the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds, as the LORD had spoken to me; and we went around Mount Seir many days.

2:2And the LORD said to me, saying, 3"Enough for you to go around this mountain; turn for yourselves northward. 4And command the people, saying, 'You are passing through the border of your brothers the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir, and they will be afraid of you. So take very good heed for yourselves. 5Do not contend with them, for I will not give you of their land, not even the tread of the sole of a foot; for I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6Food you shall buy from them with silver, that you may eat; and also water you shall purchase from them with silver, that you may drink.
7For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.'
8And we passed by from our brothers the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by the way of the Arabah, from Elath and from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab. 9And the LORD said to me, "Do not distress Moab, and do not contend with them in battle, for I will not give you of his land as a possession, because to the sons of Lot I have given Ar as a possession.
10The Emim dwelt in it formerly, a people great and many and tall, like the Anakim. 11They also are reckoned Rephaim, like the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim. 12And in Seir dwelt the Horites formerly, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them, and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead, as Israel did to the land of his possession which the LORD gave to them.
13Now rise up and cross over for yourselves the valley of Zered." And we crossed over the valley of Zered.
14And the days in which we walked from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the valley of Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation, the men of war, were finished from the midst of the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. 15And moreover the hand of the LORD was against them, to confound them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.
16And it came to pass, when all the men of war were finished, dying from the midst of the people, 17that the LORD spoke to me, saying, 18"You are passing this day the border of Moab, Ar. 19And you shall come near opposite the sons of Ammon; do not distress them, and do not contend with them, for I will not give you of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because to the sons of Lot I have given it as a possession.
20It also is reckoned a land of Rephaim; Rephaim dwelt in it formerly, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, 21a people great and many and tall, like the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their stead, 22as He did for the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their stead, even to this day. 23And the Avvim, who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came forth from Caphtor, destroyed them and dwelt in their stead.
The Defeat of Sihon
24Rise up, journey, and cross over the valley of Arnon. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle. 25This day I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you upon the faces of the peoples under all the heavens, who will hear the report of you and will tremble and be in anguish before you."
26And I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27"Let me pass through your land; on the way, on the way I will go; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28Food you shall sell me for silver, that I may eat, and water you shall give me for silver, that I may drink; only let me pass through on my feet, 29as the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir did for me, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, until I cross over the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God is giving to us."
30But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us pass by him, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to give him into your hand, as this day.

2:31And the LORD said to me, "See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess, to take possession of his land."
32And Sihon came out to meet us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33And the LORD our God gave him before us, and we struck him and his sons and all his people.
34And we captured all his cities at that time, and we devoted to destruction every city, the men and the women and the little ones; we left no survivor. 35Only the beasts we took as plunder for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.
36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a town that was too high for us; the LORD our God gave all before us. 37Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not come near, all the side of the valley of Jabbok, and the cities of the mountain, and all that the LORD our God commanded.
The Defeat of Og
3:1And we turned, and went up the way of Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all his people, to the battle at Edrei. 2And the LORD said to me, "Do not fear him, for into your hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon."
3And the LORD our God gave into our hand also Og the king of Bashan, and all his people; and we struck him until none was left to him remaining.
4And we captured all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5All these were fortified cities, with a high wall, gates, and bar; besides the unwalled towns, very many. 6And we utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying every city — the men, and the women, and the little ones.
7But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took as plunder for ourselves.
8And we took at that time the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the valley of Arnon to mount Hermon — 9(the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir) — 10all the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, to Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
11For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? Nine cubits its length, and four cubits its breadth, by the cubit of a man.
Land Division East of the Jordan
12And this land we took in possession at that time; from Aroer, which is by the valley of Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead, and its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites.
13And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob — all that Bashan is called the land of Rephaim. 14Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth-jair, to this day.

3:15And to Machir I gave Gilead. 16And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave from Gilead even to the valley of Arnon, the middle of the valley as a border, even to the Jabbok, the valley, the border of the children of Ammon; 17and the Arabah, and the Jordan as a border, from Chinnereth even to the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward.
18And I commanded you at that time, saying, "The LORD your God has given to you this land to possess it; armed you shall pass over before your brothers the children of Israel, all the sons of valor. 19Only your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle — I know that you have much cattle — shall dwell in your cities which I have given to you; 20until the LORD gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also possess the land which the LORD your God is giving to them beyond the Jordan; then you shall return, each man to his possession which I have given to you."
21And Joshua I commanded at that time, saying, "Your eyes are the ones that have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings; so will the LORD do to all the kingdoms to which you are passing over. 22You shall not fear them; for the LORD your God, he is the one fighting for you."

Judah’s Rebellion
1:1The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: Sons I have reared and raised up, and they have rebelled against Me.
3The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master's crib; Israel does not know, My people does not consider.
4Woe, a sinning nation, a people heavy with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, sons acting corruptly; they have forsaken the LORD, they have spurned the Holy One of Israel, they have turned away backward.
5Upon what will you yet be struck, that you continue to revolt? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it; a wound, and a bruise, and a fresh blow; they have not been pressed out, nor bound up, nor softened with oil.
7Your land is a desolation, your cities are burned with fire; your ground—before you strangers are devouring it, and it is a desolation, like the overthrow of strangers.
8And the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a lodge in a cucumber field, as a besieged city.
9Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a remnant, very small, we would have been like Sodom, we would have resembled Gomorrah.
Meaningless Offerings
10Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; give ear to the Torah of our God, you people of Gomorrah.
11For what to Me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD. I am sated with burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fatlings; and in the blood of bulls and lambs and he-goats I do not delight.
12When you come to appear before My face, who has required this from your hand, to trample My courts?
13You shall not continue to bring a vain offering; incense is an abomination to Me; new moon and Shabbat, the calling of a convocation—I cannot endure iniquity with the solemn assembly.
14Your new moons and your appointed times (moedim) My soul hates; they have become a burden upon Me; I am weary to bear them.
15And when you spread out your palms, I hide My eyes from you; also when you multiply prayer, I do not hear; your hands are full of blood.
16Wash yourselves, purify yourselves, remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes; cease to do evil;
17Learn to do good; seek judgment, set right the oppressed, judge the orphan, plead for the widow.
18Come now, and let us reason together, says the LORD; though your sins be like scarlet, they shall be white like snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be like wool.
19If you are willing and obey, you shall eat the good of the land;
20But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
The Corruption of Zion
21How has the faithful city become a harlot! She that was full of judgment, righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.
22Your silver has become dross, your wine is mixed with water.
23Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; every one loves a bribe, and pursues rewards; they do not judge the orphan, and the cause of the widow does not come to them.
24Therefore declares the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Ah, I will be eased of My adversaries, and avenge Myself of My enemies;
25And I will turn My hand upon you, and refine away your dross as with lye, and remove all your alloy;
26And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning; afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, a faithful city.
27Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her returning ones with righteousness.

13:16Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: 17The God of this people chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out from it. 18For a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness. 19When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land to them as an inheritance. 20After these things, for about four hundred and fifty years, He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My wills.'
