The Day of Atonement

16:1And the LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD and died; 2And the LORD said to Moses: Speak to Aaron your brother, that he not come at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the cover that is upon the ark, that he die not; for in the cloud I appear upon the cover.

3With this Aaron shall come into the holy place: with a bull, a son of the herd, for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. 4A holy tunic of linen he shall put on, and breeches of linen shall be upon his flesh, and with a sash of linen he shall gird himself, and with a turban of linen he shall be attired; they are holy garments. And he shall bathe his flesh in water and put them on. 5And from the congregation of the sons of Israel he shall take two he-goats of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

6And Aaron shall present the bull of the sin offering which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house. 7And he shall take the two goats, and set them before the LORD at the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed).

8And Aaron shall give upon the two goats lots: one lot for the LORD, and one lot for Azazel. 9And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot for the LORD came up, and make it a sin offering. 10And the goat upon which the lot for Azazel came up shall be set alive before the LORD, to make atonement over him, to send him away to Azazel into the wilderness.

11And Aaron shall present the bull of the sin offering which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall slaughter the bull of the sin offering which is for himself. 12And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from upon the altar from before the LORD, and his hands full of fragrant incense, finely beaten, and bring it within the veil. 13And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the cover that is upon the testimony, that he die not. 14And he shall take of the blood of the bull and sprinkle with his finger upon the face of the cover eastward; and before the cover he shall sprinkle seven times of the blood with his finger.

15And he shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and bring its blood within the veil, and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it upon the cover and before the cover.

16And he shall make atonement for the holy place because of the uncleannesses of the sons of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. 17And no man shall be in the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, until he comes out; and he shall make atonement for himself, and for his house, and for all the assembly of Israel.

16:18And he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it; and he shall take of the blood of the bull and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. 19And he shall sprinkle upon it of the blood with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and sanctify it from the uncleannesses of the sons of Israel.

20And when he has finished atoning for the holy place, and the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), and the altar, he shall present the living goat. 21And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the living goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel, and all their transgressions, for all their sins, and put them upon the head of the goat, and send it away by the hand of an appointed man into the wilderness. 22And the goat shall bear upon it all their iniquities to a land cut off; and he shall send away the goat in the wilderness.

23And Aaron shall come into the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), and put off the garments of linen which he put on when he went into the holy place, and leave them there. 24And he shall bathe his flesh in water in a holy place, and put on his garments, and come out, and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.

16:25And the fat of the sin offering he shall make smoke upon the altar.

26And he that sends away the goat to Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

27And the bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried out to outside the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung. 28And he that burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

29And it shall be to you an everlasting statute: in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work, the native and the sojourner who sojourns in your midst. 30For on this day he shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be clean before the LORD. 31A Shabbat of Shabbaton it is to you, and you shall afflict your souls; it is an everlasting statute.

32And the priest who is anointed, and whose hand is filled to serve as priest in place of his father, shall make atonement; and he shall put on the garments of linen, the holy garments. 33And he shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and for the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), and for the altar he shall make atonement; and for the priests and for all the people of the assembly he shall make atonement. 34And this shall be to you an everlasting statute, to make atonement for the sons of Israel because of all their sins once in the year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Place of Sacrifice

17:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel, and say to them: This is the word which the LORD commanded, saying: 3Any man, man from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or who slaughters it outside the camp, 4and to the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) he has not brought him, to present an offering to the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD — blood shall be reckoned to that man; he has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from the midst of his people.

5in order that the sons of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they are sacrificing upon the face of the field, and they shall bring them to the LORD, to the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), to the priest, and they shall sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the LORD. 6And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of the LORD at the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), and he shall make the fat smoke for a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

7And they shall no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat-demons after whom they go whoring. This shall be an everlasting statute for them throughout their generations.

17:8And to them you shall say: Any man, man from the house of Israel, or from the sojourner who sojourns in their midst, who offers up a burnt offering or a sacrifice, 9and to the opening of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) he does not bring it, to offer it to the LORD — that man shall be cut off from his people.

Laws against Eating Blood

10And any man, man from the house of Israel, or from the sojourner who sojourns in their midst, who eats any blood — I will set my face against the soul that eats the blood, and I will cut it off from the midst of its people. 11For the soul of the flesh is in the blood, and I myself have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement by the soul. 12Therefore I said to the sons of Israel: No soul among you shall eat blood, nor shall the sojourner who sojourns in your midst eat blood.

13And any man, man from the sons of Israel, or from the sojourner who sojourns in their midst, who hunts game, a living thing or a bird that may be eaten — he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust. 14For the soul of all flesh — its blood is in its soul; and I said to the sons of Israel: You shall not eat the blood of all flesh, for the soul of all flesh is its blood; everyone who eats it shall be cut off.

15And every soul that eats a carcass or that which is torn, whether native or sojourner, he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean before(ad עד) the evening; then he shall be clean. 16But if he does not wash, and does not bathe his flesh, then he shall bear his iniquity.

Unlawful Sexual Relations

18:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: I am the LORD your God. 3According to the doings of the land of Egypt, in which you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; and in their statutes you shall not walk.

4My judgments you shall do, and my statutes you shall keep, to walk in them: I am the LORD your God. 5And you shall keep my statutes and my judgments, which if the man does them, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.

18:6Any man, man — to any near kin of his flesh you shall not approach to uncover nakedness: I am the LORD.

7The nakedness of your father and the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness.

8The nakedness of your father's wife you shall not uncover; it is your father's nakedness.

9The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father or the daughter of your mother, born at home or born abroad — you shall not uncover their nakedness.

10The nakedness of your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter — you shall not uncover their nakedness, for they are your own nakedness.

11The nakedness of the daughter of your father's wife, born of your father — she is your sister, you shall not uncover her nakedness.

12The nakedness of your father's sister you shall not uncover; she is the near kin of your father.

13The nakedness of your mother's sister you shall not uncover; for she is the near kin of your mother.

14The nakedness of your father's brother you shall not uncover; to his wife you shall not approach; she is your aunt.

15The nakedness of your daughter-in-law you shall not uncover; she is your son's wife, you shall not uncover her nakedness.

16The nakedness of your brother's wife you shall not uncover; it is your brother's nakedness.

19And to a woman in the separation of her uncleanness you shall not approach to uncover her nakedness.

18:22And with a male you shall not lie the lyings of a woman; it is an abomination.

23And with any beast you shall not give your lying, to be defiled by it; and a woman shall not stand before a beast to mate with it; it is a perversion.

24Do not defile yourselves in any of these; for in all these the nations were defiled, which I am casting out from before you. 25And the land was defiled, and I visited its iniquity upon it, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.

26But you shall keep, you yourselves, my statutes and my judgments, and shall not do any of these abominations — neither the native nor the sojourner who sojourns in your midst. 27For all these abominations the men of the land who were before you did, and the land was defiled. 28And let not the land vomit you out when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.

29For everyone who does any of these abominations — the souls that do them shall be cut off from the midst of their people. 30And you shall keep my charge, not to do any of the statutes of the abominations which were done before you, and you shall not defile yourselves by them: I am the LORD your God.

Prophets (Haftarah) Amos 9:7–15

PAmos 9:7–15Chapter page with footnotes →

9:7"Are you not like the sons of the Cushites to me, O sons of Israel?" declares the LORD. "Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and Aram from Kir?

8Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the ground; except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob," declares the LORD.

9"For behold, I command, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations, as grain is shaken in a sieve, and not a pebble shall fall to the earth.

10By the sword shall all the sinners of my people die, who say, 'The evil shall not overtake nor confront us.'

A Promise of Restoration

11In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen, and I will wall up their breaches, and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

12that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations who are called by my name," declares the LORD that does this.

13"Behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that draws the seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

14And I will turn the captivity of my people Israel, and they shall build the desolate cities and dwell in them; and they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and make gardens and eat their fruit.

15And I will plant them upon their ground, and they shall no more be plucked up from off their ground which I have given them," says the LORD your God.

Apostolic Writings Hebrews 9:6–12

9:6With these things so arranged, the priests go regularly into the first tent to perform their priestly services, 7but into the second only the high priest enters, and only once a year, not without blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.

8By this the holy spirit was indicating that the way into the holy places was not yet opened as long as the first tent was still standing — 9this is a parable for the present appointed time, in which offerings and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper in terms of conscience, 10since they involve only foods and drinks and various washings, ordinances of the flesh, imposed until the appointed time of reformation.

Redemption through His Blood

11But when Messiah appeared as high priest of the good things to come, through the greater and more perfect tent not made with hands — that is, not of this creation — 12He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.
