The One Jacob met, the One we now carry within

Where this conclusion stands

Part Four itself established, from the source text, the three names Jacob called at his death — Goel, Shiloh and Yeshuah. The study appendix, "Christophany," set out in order the ways in which the One those names point to made Himself seen: theophany, Christophany, incarnation.

Both pieces were moving toward a single question. Why did Jacob call those names, of all names? And what does the answer amount to for us now. This conclusion takes up only those two.

Grammar is pointed out only where the sense turns on it — the yod and the shua that make up the name, the waw consecutive, the article ha (הַ), the passages where shua is used, and shamar and tereo, the verbs for keeping. Each is the size of a single word, and each one changes the time or the subject of its sentence.

1Jacob is the one man whose body touched Him

The Old Testament records of meeting God fall into three layers: those who heard Him speak, those who saw Him appear in a form, and the man whose body touched Him. Each layer holds fewer people than the last, and in the final layer one man is left.

The recorded appearings to the three patriarchs

To whomPassageIn what form

JacobGen 32:24~30in the form of a man, wrestling through the night
JacobGen 35:9He appeared again and confirmed the name
JacobGen 46:2He spoke in a vision of the night

Abraham has the most appearings recorded, and Jacob leaves four or more, one at each turning point of his life. But one of Jacob's belongs to a different layer from every other record.

The Jabbok — the night a hand touched Him

Gen 32:24 · OSHB v2.2 (MT 32:25)

LiteralAnd Jacob was left alone; and a man (ish) wrestled with him ad(עד) the going up of the dawn.

Gen 32:25 · OSHB v2.2 (MT 32:26)

LiteralAnd when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained as he wrestled with him.

Wrestling is an act that does not exist unless two bodies take hold of each other. And that night left a mark on Jacob's body — the socket of his thigh was put out of joint, and the text goes on to record that he passed on limping (Gen 32:31). Not a vision and not a dream, but an event that left a result in a body.

Gen 32:30 · OSHB v2.2 (MT 32:31)

LiteralAnd Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; "for I have seen God face to face, and my soul (nephesh) was delivered."

Jacob himself calls the one he faced God, and names the place Peniel, the face of God. Hosea, long after, looks back on the same event and identifies that opponent as a malakh, a messenger.

Hos 12:4 · OSHB v2.2 (MT 12:5)

LiteralAnd he strove against an angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor. At Bethel he found him, and there he spoke with us—

2The meeting came first, the names after

In Genesis 48, blessing his grandsons, Jacob names in three ways the One who kept his life — the God before whom his fathers walked, the God who fed him from his birth until that day, and the messenger who redeemed him from all evil (Gen 48:15~16). It is the third of these that carries goel.

Gen 48:16 · OSHB v2.2

Literalthe messenger who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be called in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."

As chapter 4 of Part Four established, the malakh called goel here is the One who declared Himself the God of Bethel in Gen 31:13, and the ish — the man — who wrestled with Jacob at the Jabbok. What binds the four together is not a word but an event.

Then, in the course of blessing his twelve sons one by one, in what he says over the tribe of Dan, Yeshuah appears.

Gen 49:18 · OSHB v2.2

LiteralFor your salvation (yeshuah) I wait, YHWH.

3Yeshua = Yod + Shua

This name is two pieces — the yod (י) in front and the shua (שׁוּעַ) behind.

Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ, H3442) is not a name that first appears in the New Testament. It stands in the Old Testament source text twenty-nine times as a man's name, in exactly this form, including at the head of the list of those who returned from exile (Ezr 2:2 · 1Ch 24:11 · 2Ch 31:15).

The yod in front — "He"

A Hebrew verb marks person and number on the front of the word. Set out on the root yasha (יָשַׁע, H3467, to save), a single opening letter changes the subject.

FormReadingPrefixMeaning
יוֹשִׁיעַyoshiaי (yod)He will save
תּוֹשִׁיעַtoshiaת (taw)you will save
אוֹשִׁיעַoshiaא (alef)I will save

The opening yod is "He." And because this form carries both what has not yet come and what is done again and again, it reads either way — "He saves" and "He will save."

Zep 3:17 · OSHB v2.2

LiteralYHWH your God is in your midst, a mighty one who saves (yasha); he will rejoice over you with joy, he will be silent in his love, he will exult over you with singing.

The gibbor yoshia (גִּבּוֹר יוֹשִׁיעַ) of this verse is that form — a warrior who saves, that is, He saves.

The shua behind — salvation · abundance · nobility

Shua is not a sound that carries only the act of saving. A word of the same sound points, in the source text, to one who has plenty, one who is noble (chapter 5 establishes this from the text). So the back half of this name carries both the work of saving and the One who has enough — in wealth and in rank — to carry that work through.

Put together

PieceMeaning
י — yodHe
שׁוּעַ — shuasalvation · abundance · nobility
YeshuaHe saves — the One rich and noble enough saves

Joshua יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (H3091)Yeho — YHWHshuaYHWH is salvation218
Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ (H3442)yod — HeshuaHe saves29

The two names are the same behind and different in front. The front of Joshua is the name of God; the front of Yeshua is "He." Explain Yeshua only as a shortened form of Joshua and stop there, and you miss the "He" that the opening yod sets up. That the doer stands inside the name is the whole point of this name.

Matthew unfolds the name exactly so

In Matthew 1:21 the instruction to give the name and the meaning of the name stand joined in one sentence.

Mat 1:21 · RP2018

LiteralAnd she will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Yeshua(Jesus), for He will save His people from their sins."

The Greek sosei (σώσει) is future, and the autos (αὐτὸς) before it is the pronoun that puts weight on "He Himself." Matthew does not render the name with the noun "salvation" but unfolds it as a sentence: "He will save." The "He" that the Hebrew opening yod set up is what the Greek takes up in autos.

4One waw turns what is ahead into what is past

Hebrew has a device that hangs a waw (וַ) on the front of that same yod-form. With the waw attached the time turns over, and a form that spoke of what had not yet come becomes a form that narrates what has already happened. Nearly all of the narrative of Scripture runs in this form.

The verb Jacob used in Genesis 49:18 is the perfect of qawah (קִוָּה, to wait) — "I have waited for Your Yeshuah." What he waited for had not yet come. The wayyosha of Exodus 14:30 records what has already happened. One root stands on both sides of the same event in time.

Not everything a waw touches turns over

The tense turns over when the waw is attached to a verb. A noun from the same root with the conjunction waw in front does not turn over.

5He must be able to redeem

The goel provision requires two things together. The first is that he be a kinsman; the second, that he be able to bear the price of redemption.

Lev 25:25 · OSHB v2.2

LiteralWhen your brother becomes poor, and sells some of his possession, then his redeemer, the near one to him, shall come, and shall redeem the sale of his brother.

Ruth 4 shows plainly that the first condition alone is not enough. There was a kinsman nearer than Boaz, and he drew back.

Rut 4:6 · OSHB v2.2

LiteralAnd the redeemer said: "I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance; redeem for yourself my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem."

Standing is not enough if one cannot bear it. So the place of the goel requires rank and capacity together.

Shua — the One who has plenty and is honoured

What the back half of the name carries, the source text shows directly. Shua (שׁוֹעַ, H7771) is used to point not at the act of saving but at a standing.

Job 34:19 · OSHB v2.2

In the one it is set against poverty and in the other against folly. That is, the single word shua holds abundance and nobility at once.

6Ha-Goel — the One who became our kinsman

In Genesis 48:16 the article ha (הַ) stands in front of goel. Hebrew ha corresponds to English "the": it singles one out from among many. What Jacob called, then, was not a redeemer but the Redeemer.

FormReadingMeaning
גֹּאֵלgoelone who redeems
הַגֹּאֵלha-goelthe one who redeems

As chapter 5 established, the place of the goel requires two things together — that he be a near kinsman, and that he bear the price. How those two are filled is followed here in the order the text gives.

Step one — all mankind is one household

For the kinship condition to hold, the side redeemed and the side redeeming must first be of one household. Genesis records mankind after the flood as one, spread out from a single forefather.

Gen 9:19 · OSHB v2.2

LiteralThese three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was overspread.

Paul states the same thing at Athens.

@본문표 Act 17:26

VerseYLV
Act 17:26and He made from one blood every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed kairos(appointed-time)s and the boundaries of their habitation,

Because men spread over all the earth from the three sons of Noah, mankind after the flood is not many peoples divided by blood but one household. Here is the ground on which the words "near kinsman," which the goel provision requires, can hold for the whole race.

Step two — the incarnation, entering that household

But the One who is God stands outside that household. And so He came inside it.

@본문표 Heb 2:14; Heb 2:11; Heb 2:16; Heb 2:17

VerseYLV
Heb 2:14Since therefore the children koinoneo(share, partake) in sarx(flesh) and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same, so that through death He might nullify the one having the kratos(dominion) of death — that is, the diabolos(devil, accuser, slanderer) —
Heb 2:11For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all of one; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brothers,
Heb 2:16For it is not angels that He helps, but He helps the seed of Abraham.
Heb 2:17Therefore He was obligated to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Hebrews puts this four different ways — since the children have shared in flesh and blood, He likewise shared in the same (2:14); the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all of one (2:11); the ones He helps are not angels but the seed of Abraham (2:16); and therefore He was obliged to be made like His brothers in all things (2:17).

The phrase "was obliged" in 2:17 overlaps exactly with the language of the goel provision. Redemption is not a favour a stranger extends but a duty that falls to the nearest kinsman.

The name of that door — Judah and David read in the ancient letters

Hebrew letters came out of pictures. In the letter shapes older than the square script now in use, each letter copied the shape of a thing, and the name of the letter is the name of that thing. Two letters bear on this.

Dalet is a door, waw is a nail — the names Judah and David are built from those two letters

דdaletdoor — the way in and outdelet (דֶּלֶת, H1817) · door
וwawnail · peg — what fastenswaw (וָו, H2053) · the hooks of the tabernacle (Exo 26:32)

That is, dalet copies the door of a tent, and waw the peg that fastens a tent to the ground.

Judah — a door set inside the name of YHWH

Set the consonants of Judah (יְהוּדָה) beside the name of YHWH and one letter differs.

It is the shape of a dalet — a door — set inside the name of YHWH. And the tribe of which Jacob said at his death that the sceptre and the ruler's staff would not depart is this Judah (Gen 49:10 · Part Four, chapter 5), and Revelation calls Him the Lion of the tribe of Judah.

Samuel and Kings write it in this three-consonant form 596 times; Chronicles and others write it דָּוִיד, with one more yod, 251 times.

David's life ran on through flight, war and trouble in his own house to the end of his days. And the mark the New Testament leaves concerning the One who would take up his throne is the print of nails.

7Ha-Mashiach — the inheritance redeemed and its King

The work of a goel does not end with paying the debt. As Leviticus 25:25 records, redemption is the returning of what was sold to where it belonged. After the price is paid the inheritance comes back.

Mashiach (מָשִׁיחַ) is one anointed, and here too the article attaches — ha-mashiach (הַמָּשִׁיחַ), "the anointed one." In the Old Testament anointing was the procedure that installed a priest and a king.

8The Spirit was in Jacob, and the same One is in us

As the appendix "Christophany" set apart, an appearing is a form taken for a time and the incarnation is human nature taken forever. That difference is a difference in the manner of the appearing. It does not mean that Jacob had no indwelling and only we have one.

What Jacob said is itself the evidence

Most of what this study has read is speech of Jacob's — the three names of Gen 48:16, Shiloh in Gen 49:10, Yeshuah in Gen 49:18. Scripture states where such speech comes from.

@본문표 2Pe 1:21; 1Pe 1:11; Gen 41:38; Joh 14:26

VerseYLV
2Pe 1:21For no prophecy was ever produced by the thelema(will) of man, but holy men of God spoke, being carried along by the hagio(holy) pneuma(spirit).
1Pe 1:11inquiring what person or what kairos(appointed-time) the pneuma(spirit) of Messiah(Christ) within them was indicating when it testified in advance to the sufferings of Messiah(Christ) and the doxai(glories) to follow.
Gen 41:38And Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find a man (ish) like this, in whom is the spirit (ruach) of God?"
Joh 14:26But the Parakletos(the One who comes alongside to call), the hagio(holy) pneuma(spirit), whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

"Within them" in 1Pe 1:11 is Greek en with the dative, and it names the place inside, not alongside. The statement is that the One at work when the prophets testified in advance to Messiah's sufferings and glories was the pneuma of Messiah within them. 2Pe 1:21 says the same thing from the human side — no prophecy ever came by the will of man.

Gen 41:38 is a witness from inside this same household. Pharaoh calls Joseph a man in whom is the spirit (ruach) of God. Genesis 49, where Joseph's father names the future of each of the twelve one by one and picks out Shiloh from Judah, is speech of the same kind.

Joh 14:26 names two works of that pneuma — teaching and bringing to remembrance. Those two are exactly what Jacob does at his deathbed. He calls up a night from decades before, and he names the One he met there as the One who redeems (Gen 48:15–16).

What Abraham kept is the abiding of Joh 15:10

VerseYLV

Hab 2:4Behold, the puffed up—his soul (nephesh) is not upright within him; but the righteous shall live (chai) by his faith.

"Kept" in Gen 26:5 is Hebrew shamar, the guarding of what has been entrusted so that it is not let go. "If you keep" in Joh 15:10, read in chapter 6 of the main study, is Greek tereo, the same act, and that sentence sets keeping and abiding side by side in one line. Gen 26:5 is the record of Abraham living that abiding out. "By his faith" in Hab 2:4 is Hebrew be-emunato (בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ) — emunah (אֱמוּנָה, faithfulness, holding fast) with "his" attached. That is what Scripture calls a life of keeping hold.

Jacob is the same. The vow he made at Bethel (Gen 28:20–22) he kept long afterward: at the word he goes up to Bethel again and has the foreign gods of his household put away (Gen 35:1–3).

What changed after the incarnation is that the abiding was nailed down as a promise and poured out on everyone who believes.
