Psalms 56

1To the chief musician, upon "The silent dove of those far off." Of David, a Michtam, when the Philistines seized him in Gath.

2Be gracious to me, O God, for man pants after me; all the day the fighter oppresses me.

3My foes pant after me all the day, for many fight against me proudly.

4The day I am afraid, I will trust in You.

5In God I praise His word; in God I trust, I will not fear. What can flesh (basar) do to me?

6All the day they wrest my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil.

7They gather, they hide; they watch my heels, even as they have waited for my soul (nephesh).

8Because of iniquity, cast them out; in anger bring down the peoples, O God.

9My wandering You have counted; put my tears into Your bottle—are they not in Your book?

10Then my enemies will turn back in the day I call; this I know, that God is for me.

11In God I praise the word; in YHWH I praise the word.

12In God I trust, I will not fear. What can man (adam) do to me?

13Upon me, O God, are Your vows; I will repay thank-offerings to You.

14For You have delivered my soul (nephesh) from death—have You not kept my feet from stumbling?—to walk before God in the light of the living (chai).
