Proverbs 13

1A wise son—the discipline of a father; but a scorner does not listen to rebuke.

2From the fruit of a man's (ish) mouth he eats good; but the soul (nephesh) of the treacherous is violence.

3One who guards his mouth keeps his soul (nephesh); one who opens wide his lips—ruin to him.

4The soul (nephesh) of the sluggard craves, and there is nothing; but the soul (nephesh) of the diligent is made fat.

5A word of falsehood the righteous hates; but the wicked acts loathsomely and brings shame.

6Righteousness guards the one blameless of way; but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

7There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; one who makes himself poor, yet has much wealth.

8The ransom of a man's (ish) soul (nephesh) is his riches; but the poor one does not hear a rebuke.

9The light of the righteous rejoices; but the lamp of the wicked is put out.

10Only by insolence does one give strife; but with the well-advised is wisdom.

11Wealth from vanity diminishes; but one who gathers by hand increases.

12Hope deferred makes the heart sick; but a desire come is a tree of life (chai).

13One who despises the word shall be brought to ruin for it; but one who fears the commandment (mitzvah)—he is rewarded.

14The Torah of the wise is a fountain of life (chai), to turn aside from the snares of death.

15Good understanding gives favor; but the way of the treacherous is hard.

16Every prudent one acts with knowledge; but a fool spreads out foolishness.

17A wicked messenger falls into evil; but a faithful envoy is healing.

18Poverty and shame to one who ignores discipline; but one who keeps reproof is honored.

19A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul (nephesh); but an abomination of fools is to turn aside from evil.

20One who walks with the wise becomes wise; but one who befriends fools is broken.

21Evil pursues sinners; but the righteous—good shall repay them.

22A good one causes children's children to inherit; but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous.

23Much food is in the fallow ground of the poor; but there is one swept away for lack of judgment (mishpat).

24One who spares his rod hates his son; but one who loves him seeks him early with discipline.

25The righteous eats to the satisfaction of his soul (nephesh); but the belly of the wicked lacks.
