The Spies Explore Canaan
13:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2"Send for yourself men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel; one man, one man for the tribe of his fathers you shall send, each a prince among them."
3And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran by the mouth of the LORD; all of them men, heads of the sons of Israel were they. 4And these are their names: for the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
5For the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.
6For the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
7For the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
8For the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.
9For the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
10For the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
11For the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.
12For the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
13For the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
14For the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
15For the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up here into the Negev, and go up into the mountain; 18and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; 19and what the land is in which they dwell, whether it is good or evil; and what the cities are in which they dwell, whether in camps or in strongholds; 20and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is a tree in it or not. And you shall strengthen yourselves, and take from the fruit of the land." Now the days were the days of the first-ripe grapes.

13:21And they went up and spied out the land, from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, at the entrance of Hamath. 22And they went up into the Negev, and he came to Hebron; and there were Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak. Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan of Egypt.
23And they came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a pole between two; and of the pomegranates and of the figs. 24That place he called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there.
The Reports of the Spies
25And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
27And they recounted to him, and said, "We came to the land where you sent us, and indeed it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28However, the people who dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. 29Amalek dwells in the land of the Negev; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the mountain; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea and along the side of the Jordan."
30And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said, "Let us surely go up and possess it, for we are surely able to prevail against it."
31But the men who went up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we."
32And they brought out an evil report of the land which they had spied out, to the sons of Israel, saying, "The land through which we passed to spy it out is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in its midst are men of measures. 33And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who are from the Nephilim; and we were in our eyes like grasshoppers, and so we were in their eyes."
Israel’s Rebellion
14:1And all the congregation lifted up and gave their voice, and the people wept in that night. 2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, and all the congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt, or in this wilderness would that we had died! 3And why is the LORD bringing us to this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be for a prey. Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?"
4And they said, a man to his brother, "Let us give a head, and let us return to Egypt."
5And Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of those who spied out the land, tore their garments. 7And they said to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "The land which we passed through to spy it out, the land is exceedingly, exceedingly good.

14:8If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us to this land and give it to us, a land which is flowing with milk and honey. 9Only against the LORD do not rebel, and you, do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their shadow has departed from over them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them."
10And all the congregation said to stone them with stones; but the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of appointed time (mo-ed) to all the children of Israel. 11And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have done in their midst? 12I will smite them with the pestilence and dispossess them, and I will make you into a nation greater and mightier than them."
Moses Intercedes for Israel
13And Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear—for you brought up this people by your might from their midst— 14and they will say to the inhabitant of this land—they have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people, that you, O LORD, are seen eye to eye, and your cloud stands over them, and in a pillar of cloud you go before them by day, and in a pillar of fire by night—
15and if you kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard your fame will say, saying, 16'Because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which he swore to them, therefore he slaughtered them in the wilderness.'
17And now, let the power of my Lord be great, as you have spoken, saying, 18'the LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.'
19Pardon, please, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your lovingkindness, and as you have forgiven this people from Egypt even until here."
God’s Forgiveness and Judgment
20And the LORD said, "I have pardoned according to your word. 21But nevertheless, as I live, and the glory of the LORD shall fill all the earth— 22for all the men who saw my glory and my signs, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice, 23surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers; and all who despised me shall not see it.
24But my servant Caleb, because another spirit was with him, and he fully followed after me, I will bring him to the land where he went, and his seed shall possess it.
25Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley; tomorrow turn and journey for yourselves to the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds."

14:26And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27"How long shall I bear this evil congregation, which they keep murmuring against me? The murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against me, I have heard. 28Say to them, 'As I live,' declares the LORD, 'surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you. 29In this wilderness your carcasses shall fall, even all your numbered ones according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who murmured against me.
30Surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I lifted up my hand to make you dwell in it, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31But your little ones, whom you said would be a prey, I will bring them in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected. 32But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.
33And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and they shall bear your harlotries, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness. 34According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year, you shall bear your iniquities forty years, and you shall know my opposition.
35I, the LORD, have spoken; surely this I will do to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.'"
The Plague on the Ten Spies
36And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who returned and made all the congregation murmur against him by bringing out a report against the land, 37even the men, the bringers of the evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD. 38But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh lived, of those men who went to spy out the land.
39And Moses spoke these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.
The Defeat at Hormah
40And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, "Here we are, and we will go up to the place which the LORD said; for we have sinned."
41And Moses said, "Why is this that you transgress the mouth of the LORD? And it shall not prosper. 42Do not go up, for the LORD is not in your midst, lest you be struck before your enemies. 43For the Amalekite and the Canaanite are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have turned back from following the LORD, and the LORD will not be with you."
44But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain; but the ark of the covenant of the LORD and Moses did not depart from the midst of the camp. 45And the Amalekite and the Canaanite who dwelt in that mountain came down, and smote them and beat them down, as far as Hormah.
Laws about Offerings
15:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2"Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, 'When you come into the land of your dwellings which I give to you, 3and you make a fire-offering to the LORD, a burnt offering or a sacrifice, to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering, or in your appointed times (moedim), to make a soothing aroma to the LORD, from the herd or from the flock, 4then he who brings his offering shall present to the LORD a grain offering of a tenth of fine flour mixed with the fourth of a hin of oil; 5and wine for the drink offering, a fourth of a hin, you shall prepare with the burnt offering or for the sacrifice, for each lamb.
6Or for a ram you shall prepare a grain offering of fine flour, two tenths, mixed with the third of a hin of oil; 7and wine for the drink offering, a third of a hin, you shall present, a soothing aroma to the LORD.

15:8And when you prepare a young bull as a burnt offering or a sacrifice, to fulfill a vow or as peace offerings to the LORD, 9then he shall present with the young bull a grain offering of fine flour, three tenths, mixed with half a hin of oil. 10And wine you shall present for the drink offering, half a hin, a fire-offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD. 11Thus shall it be done for each ox, or for each ram, or for a lamb among the sheep, or among the goats. 12According to the number that you prepare, so shall you do for each according to their number.
13Every native-born shall do these things in this way, to present a fire-offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD. 14And when a sojourner sojourns with you, or whoever is among you throughout your generations, and he makes a fire-offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD, as you do, so shall he do. 15For the assembly, one statute for you and for the sojourner who sojourns, a statute forever throughout your generations; as you are, so shall the sojourner be before the LORD. 16One Torah and one judgment shall be for you and for the sojourner who sojourns with you.'"

15:17And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 18"Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, 'When you come into the land where I am bringing you, 19then it shall be, when you eat of the bread of the land, you shall set apart a contribution to the LORD. 20The first of your dough, a cake you shall set apart as a contribution; like the contribution of the threshing floor, so shall you set it apart. 21Of the first of your dough you shall give to the LORD a contribution throughout your generations.
Offerings for Unintentional Sins
22And when you err and do not do all these commandments which the LORD has spoken to Moses, 23all that the LORD commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the LORD commanded and onward throughout your generations, 24then it shall be, if it is done in error, away from the eyes of the congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one young bull for a burnt offering, for a soothing aroma to the LORD, with its grain offering and its drink offering according to the judgment, and one male goat for a sin offering.
25And the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the children of Israel, and they shall be forgiven; for it was an error, and they have brought their offering, a fire-offering to the LORD, and their sin offering before the LORD for their error. 26And all the congregation of the children of Israel shall be forgiven, and the sojourner who sojourns among them; for it happened to all the people in error.
7Reading 7 Numbers 15:27–41Chapter page with footnotes →
15:27And if one soul sins in error, then it shall offer a female goat in its first year for a sin offering. 28And the priest shall make atonement for the soul that errs, when it sins in error, before the LORD, to make atonement for him; and he shall be forgiven. 29The native-born among the children of Israel, and the sojourner who sojourns among them—one Torah shall be for you, for him who does anything in error.
30But the soul who acts with a high hand, whether native-born or sojourner, he blasphemes the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from the midst of its people. 31Because he has despised the word of the LORD and broken his commandment, that soul shall surely be cut off; its iniquity is upon it.'"
A Shabbat-Breaker Stoned
32And the children of Israel were in the wilderness, and they found a man gathering wood on the day of the Shabbat. 33And those who found him gathering wood brought him near to Moses and to Aaron and to all the congregation. 34And they put him in custody, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.
35And the LORD said to Moses, "The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp."
36And all the congregation brought him outside the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as the LORD commanded Moses.
The Law of Tassels
37And the LORD said to Moses, saying, 38"Speak to the children of Israel and say to them that they make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and they shall put on the fringe of each corner a cord of blue. 39And it shall be for you as a fringe, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and you shall not go about after your own heart and after your own eyes, after which you go whoring;
40so that you may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God. 41I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the LORD your God.'"

Rahab Welcomes the Spies
2:1And Joshua the son of Nun sent from Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying: "Go, see the land, and Jericho." And they went, and came into the house of a woman, a harlot, and her name was Rahab, and they lay there.
2And it was said to the king of Jericho, saying: "Behold, men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the land."
3And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying: "Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land."
4And the woman took the two men and hid them, and she said: "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know from where they were; 5and it came to pass, as the gate was to be shut, in the darkness, that the men went out; I do not know where the men went; pursue quickly after them, for you will overtake them." 6But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them among the stalks of flax which she had arranged for herself on the roof.
7And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan, to the fords; and the gate was shut after the pursuers had gone out after them.
The Promise to Rahab
8And before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, 9and she said to the men: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed. 11And we heard, and our heart melted, and no spirit remained any more in any man because of you; for the LORD your God, He is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.
12And now, swear to me, please, by the LORD, since I have done kindness with you, that you also will do kindness with my father's house, and you shall give me a true sign, 13and you shall keep alive my father, and my mother, and my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and you shall deliver our souls from death."
14And the men said to her: "Our soul for yours, to die, if you do not tell this our matter; and it shall be, when the LORD gives us the land, that we will deal with you in kindness and truth."
15Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was in the wall of the city wall, and within the city wall she dwelt. 16And she said to them: "Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers return, and afterward you may go on your way."
17And the men said to her: "We will be guiltless of this your oath which you have made us swear. 18Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this cord of scarlet thread in the window by which you let us down, and your father, and your mother, and your brothers, and all your father's house you shall gather to yourself into the house. 19And it shall be, anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his head, and we will be guiltless; but anyone who shall be with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if a hand is on him. 20But if you tell this our matter, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you have made us swear."
21And she said: "According to your words, so be it." And she sent them away, and they went; and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
22And they went, and came to the mountain, and dwelt there three days, until the pursuers returned; and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but did not find them. 23And the two men returned, and came down from the mountain, and crossed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they recounted to him all that had befallen them.
24And they said to Joshua: "Truly the LORD has given into our hand all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us."

The Peril of Unbelief
3:12See to it, brothers, that no one among you has a wicked heart of unbelief in falling away from the living God. 13But encourage one another every day, as long as it is called "today," so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
14For we have become fellow participant of Messiah, if indeed we hold our initial confidence firm to the end. 15As it is said, "Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."
16For some, when they had heard, rebelled; yet not all those who came out of Egypt through Moses. 17And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
