The bow in the cloud, the sign of the covenantGenesis 9:12–16

Summary

Noah, a righteous man, builds the ark at God's command. The flood covers the earth, and only those in the ark are kept alive. God makes a covenant with Noah and sets the rainbow as its sign. Later the people build a tower at Babel, and God confuses their language and scatters them. The portion closes with the line of Shem down to Abram.

1Reading 1 Genesis 6:9–22Chapter page with footnotes →

6:9These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generations; Noah walked with God. 10And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.

Preparing the Ark

13And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.

14Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; rooms you shall make the ark, and you shall cover it from inside and from outside with pitch. 15And this is how you shall make it: three hundred cubits the length of the ark, fifty cubits its breadth, and thirty cubits its height. 16A roof you shall make for the ark, and to a cubit you shall finish it from above; and the door of the ark you shall set in its side; lower, second, and third decks you shall make it.

17And I, behold, I am bringing the flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the spirit of life from under the heavens; everything that is in the earth shall expire. 18But I will establish my covenant with you; and you shall come into the ark, you and your sons and your woman and the women of your sons with you.

19And of all the living, of all flesh, two of each you shall bring into the ark to keep alive with you; male and female they shall be. 20Of the bird after its kind, and of the beast after its kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of each shall come to you to keep alive. 21And you, take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for you and for them for food."

22And Noah did according to all that God commanded him; so he did.

The Great Flood

7:1And the LORD said to Noah, "Come, you and all your house, into the ark, for you I have seen righteous before me in this generation. 2Of every clean beast you shall take for yourself seven seven, a man and his woman; and of the beast that is not clean, two, a man and his woman. 3Also of the bird of the heavens, seven seven, male and female, to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. 4For in yet seven days I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will blot out all that exists, which I have made, from upon the face of the ground."

5And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him.

6And Noah was a son of six hundred years, and the flood was waters upon the earth. 7And Noah went in, and his sons and his woman and the women of his sons with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. 8Of the clean beast, and of the beast that is not clean, and of the bird, and of all that creeps upon the ground, 9two two they came to Noah into the ark, male and female, as God commanded Noah.

10And it came to pass after the seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. 11In the year of six hundred years of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on this day all the fountains of the great deep were broken open, and the windows of the heavens were opened. 12And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

13In the bone of this day Noah came, and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and the woman of Noah and the three women of his sons with them, into the ark; 14they, and every living thing after its kind, and every beast after its kind, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird, every winged thing. 15And they came to Noah into the ark, two two of all flesh in which is the spirit of life. 16And those that came, male and female of all flesh they came, as God commanded him; and the LORD shut [the door] behind him.

3Reading 3 Genesis 7:17–8:14Chapter page with footnotes →

7:17And the flood was forty days upon the earth, and the waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose up from upon the earth. 18And the waters prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark went upon the face of the waters. 19And the waters prevailed very, very much upon the earth, and all the high mountains that were under all the heavens were covered.

20Fifteen cubits upward the waters prevailed, and the mountains were covered. 21And all flesh that moved upon the earth expired: the bird, and the beast, and the living thing, and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and every man; 22all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. 23And he blotted out all that exists, which was upon the face of the ground, from man to beast, to creeping thing, and to bird of the heavens; and they were blotted out from the earth; and only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark.

24And the waters prevailed upon the earth fifty and a hundred days.

The Ark Rests on Ararat

8:1And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. 2And the fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were stopped, and the rain from the heavens was restrained. 3And the waters returned from upon the earth, going and returning; and the waters decreased at the end of a hundred and fifty days.

4And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. 5And the waters were going and decreasing ad(עד) the tenth month; in the tenth, on the first of the month, the tops of the mountains appeared.

Noah Sends a Raven and a Dove

6And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made. 7And he sent forth the raven, and it went out, going out and returning, ad(עד) the waters were dried up from upon the earth.

8And he sent forth the dove from him, to see whether the waters had abated from upon the face of the ground. 9But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned to him, to the ark, for the waters were upon the face of all the earth; and he put forth his hand and took her and brought her to him into the ark.

10And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent forth the dove from the ark. 11And the dove came in to him at the time of evening, and behold, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in her mouth; and Noah knew that the waters had abated from upon the earth.

12And he waited yet another seven days, and he sent forth the dove; and she did not return to him again.

Exiting the Ark

13And it came to pass, in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, that the waters were dried from upon the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the face of the ground was dried. 14And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.

8:15And God spoke to Noah, saying, 16"Go out from the ark, you and your woman and your sons and the women of your sons with you. 17Every living thing that is with you, of all flesh, of bird and of cattle and of every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth, bring out with you; and let them swarm in the earth and be fruitful and multiply upon the earth."

18And Noah went out, and his sons and his woman and the women of his sons with him. 19Every living thing, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves upon the earth, after their families, went out of the ark.

Noah Builds an Altar

20And Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean beast and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings upon the altar. 21And the LORD smelled the soothing aroma; and the LORD said in his heart, "I will not again curse the ground any more because of man, for the inclination of the heart of man is evil from his youth; and I will not again strike any more every living thing, as I have done.

22Yet all the days of the earth, seed and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

The Covenant of the Rainbow

9:1And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 2And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every living thing of the earth, and upon every bird of the heavens, upon all that the ground creeps with, and upon all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are given. 3Every moving thing that is alive shall be for food for you; as the green herb I have given you all. 4But flesh with its soul, its blood, you shall not eat. 5And surely your blood, for your souls, I will require; from the hand of every living thing I will require it, and from the hand of man, from the hand of a man, his brother, I will require the soul of man.

6Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God he made man.

7And you, be fruitful and multiply; swarm in the earth and multiply in it."

9:8And God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9"And I, behold, I am establishing my covenant with you, and with your seed after you, 10and with every living soul that is with you, of the bird, of the cattle, and of every living thing of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, to every living thing of the earth. 11And I will establish my covenant with you, and all flesh shall not be cut off any more by the waters of the flood; and there shall not be a flood any more to destroy the earth."

12And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I am giving between me and you and every living soul that is with you, for everlasting generations: 13I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between me and the earth.

14And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, and the bow is seen in the cloud, 15that I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living soul of all flesh; and the waters shall not again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will see it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living soul of all flesh that is upon the earth."

17And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth."

Noah’s Shame and Canaan’s Curse

9:18And the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth; and Ham, he is the father of Canaan. 19These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was overspread.

20And Noah began, a man of the ground, and planted a vineyard. 21And he drank of the wine and became drunk, and he uncovered himself within his tent. 22And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.

23And Shem and Japheth took the garment and laid it upon the shoulder of both of them, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they did not see the nakedness of their father.

24And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25And he said, "Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he shall be to his brothers."

Shem’s Blessing and Noah’s Death

26And he said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be a servant to them.

27May God enlarge Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be a servant to them."

28And Noah lived after the flood three hundred years and fifty years. 29And all the days of Noah were nine hundred years and fifty years; and he died.

The Table of Nations

10:1And these are the generations of the sons of Noah — Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and sons were born to them after the flood.

2The sons of Japheth: Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras.

3And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah.

4And the sons of Javan: Elishah and Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim. 5From these the isles of the nations were divided in their lands, each man after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

6And the sons of Ham: Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan.

7And the sons of Cush: Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

8And Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one in the earth. 9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD." 10And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11From that land Asshur went out, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, 12and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.

13And Mizraim begot the Ludim and the Anamim and the Lehabim and the Naphtuhim, 14and the Pathrusim and the Casluhim, from whom the Philistines went out, and the Caphtorim.

15And Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, 16and the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite, 17and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite, 18and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. 19And the border of the Canaanite was from Sidon, as you go toward Gerar, unto Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, unto Lasha.

20These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, in their nations.

21And to Shem also, the father of all the sons of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, children were born.

22The sons of Shem: Elam and Asshur and Arpachshad and Lud and Aram.

23And the sons of Aram: Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash.

24And Arpachshad begot Shelah; and Shelah begot Eber.

25And to Eber were born two sons; the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

26And Joktan begot Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah, 27and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah, 28and Obal and Abimael and Sheba, 29and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. 30And their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east.

31These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.

32These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided in the earth after the flood.

The Tower of Babel

11:1And the whole earth was of one language and the same words. 2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.

3And they said, each man to his neighbor, "Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly." And the brick was to them for stone, and the bitumen was to them for mortar.

4And they said, "Come, let us build for ourselves a city and a tower, and its top in the heavens; and let us make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered upon the face of all the earth."

5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of man had built. 6And the LORD said, "Behold, one people, and one language for all of them; and this they begin to do, and now nothing will be withheld from them which they purpose to do. 7Come, let us go down, and confound there their language, that they may not understand, each man the language of his neighbor."

8And the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased to build the city. 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confounded the language of all the earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.

Genealogy from Shem to Abram

10These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a son of a hundred years, and he begot Arpachshad two years after the flood. 11And Shem lived after he begot Arpachshad five hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

12And Arpachshad lived five and thirty years, and he begot Shelah. 13And Arpachshad lived after he begot Shelah three years and four hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

14And Shelah lived thirty years, and he begot Eber. 15And Shelah lived after he begot Eber three years and four hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

16And Eber lived four and thirty years, and he begot Peleg. 17And Eber lived after he begot Peleg thirty years and four hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

18And Peleg lived thirty years, and he begot Reu. 19And Peleg lived after he begot Reu nine years and two hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

20And Reu lived two and thirty years, and he begot Serug. 21And Reu lived after he begot Serug seven years and two hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

22And Serug lived thirty years, and he begot Nahor. 23And Serug lived after he begot Nahor two hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

24And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and he begot Terah. 25And Nahor lived after he begot Terah nineteen years and a hundred years, and he begot sons and daughters.

26And Terah lived seventy years, and he begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Terah’s Descendants

27And these are the generations of Terah. Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot. 28And Haran died in the presence of Terah his father, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

29And Abram and Nahor took for themselves women; the name of Abram's woman was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's woman was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. 30And Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the woman of Abram his son, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go to the land of Canaan; and they came as far as Haran, and dwelt there. 32And the days of Terah were five years and two hundred years; and Terah died in Haran.

Future Blessings for Zion

54:1Sing, O barren one who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who did not travail; for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married woman, says the LORD.

2Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your tabernacles; spare not; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.

3For to the right and to the left you shall break forth, and your seed shall possess nations, and they shall inhabit desolate cities.

4Fear not, for you shall not be ashamed; neither be confounded, for you shall not be put to shame; for the shame of your youth you shall forget, and the reproach of your widowhood you shall remember no more.

5For your Maker is your husband—the LORD of hosts is his name—and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; the God of all the earth he is called.

6For like a woman forsaken and grieved of spirit the LORD has called you, and like a wife of youth when she is rejected, says your God.

7For a small moment I forsook you, but with great compassion I will gather you.

8In an overflow of wrath I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I have had compassion on you, says the LORD your Redeemer.

9For this is to me as the waters of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah should no more pass over the earth; so I have sworn not to be wroth with you, nor to rebuke you.

10For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall my covenant of peace be removed, says the LORD who has compassion on you.

11O afflicted one, storm-tossed, not comforted, behold, I am setting your stones in antimony, and I will lay your foundations with sapphires.

12And I will make your battlements of rubies, and your gates of carbuncle stones, and all your border of stones of delight.

13And all your children shall be taught of the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.

14In righteousness you shall be established; be far from oppression, for you shall not fear, and from terror, for it shall not come near to you.

15Behold, they may surely gather, but not from me; whoever gathers against you shall fall because of you.

16Behold, I myself have created the smith who blows the coals in the fire, and brings out a weapon for his work; and I myself have created the destroyer to ruin.

17Every weapon formed against you shall not prosper, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the inheritance of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is from me, declares the LORD.

Invitation to the Needy

55:1Ho, every one who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money; come, buy, and eat; yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

2Why do you weigh out money for what is not bread, and your labor for what does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

3Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, and your soul shall live; and I will cut for you an everlasting covenant, the faithful kindnesses of David.

4Behold, I have given him for a witness to the peoples, a leader and a commander to the peoples.

5Behold, a nation you do not know you shall call, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and for the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.

Readiness at Any Hour

24:36But of that day and hour no one knows — not even the angels of heaven — but only My Father alone. 37For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. 38For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away — so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40Then there will be two men in the field — one will be taken and one will be left. 41Two women will be grinding at the mill — one will be taken and one will be left.

42Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which hour your Lord is coming. 43But be sure of this: if the head of the house had known at what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 44For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at a hour when you do not expect Him.
