Holiness Required of Priests

21:1And the LORD said to Moses: Say to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and you shall say to them: For a soul none shall defile himself among his people; 2except for his kin who is near to him: for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother; 3and for his sister, the virgin who is near to him, who has not belonged to a man: for her he may defile himself. 4He shall not defile himself as a master among his people, to profane himself.

5They shall not make baldness upon their head, and the corner of their beard they shall not shave, and in their flesh they shall not cut a cutting. 6Holy they shall be to their God, and they shall not profane the name of their God; for the fire-offerings of the LORD, the bread of their God, they offer; so they shall be holy.

7A woman who is a harlot or profaned they shall not take, and a woman divorced from her husband they shall not take; for he is holy to his God. 8And you shall sanctify him, for the bread of your God he offers; holy he shall be to you, for holy am I, the LORD, who sanctifies you. 9And a daughter of a man who is a priest, if she profanes herself by playing the harlot, her father she profanes; with fire she shall be burned.

10And the priest who is great among his brothers, upon whose head the anointing oil is poured, and who has filled his hand to put on the garments, his head he shall not let go loose, and his garments he shall not tear. 11And to any dead souls he shall not come; for his father or for his mother he shall not defile himself. 12And from the sanctuary he shall not go out, and he shall not profane the sanctuary of his God; for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the LORD.

13And he, a woman in her virginity he shall take. 14A widow, or a divorced one, or a profaned one, a harlot, these he shall not take; but a virgin from his people he shall take as a woman. 15And he shall not profane his seed among his people; for I am the LORD who sanctifies him.

Restrictions against Those with Blemishes

21:16And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 17Speak to Aaron, saying: A man from your seed throughout their generations in whom there is a blemish shall not draw near to offer the bread of his God.

18For any man in whom there is a blemish shall not draw near: a man blind, or lame, or mutilated, or with a limb overlong; 19or a man in whom there is a broken foot, or a broken hand; 20or a hunchback, or a dwarf, or one with a blemish in his eye, or scab, or scurvy, or with crushed testicles.

21Any man in whom there is a blemish, from the seed of Aaron the priest, shall not approach to offer the fire-offerings of the LORD; a blemish is in him; the bread of his God he shall not approach to offer. 22The bread of his God, of the most holy and of the holy, he may eat. 23Only to the veil he shall not come, and to the altar he shall not approach, for a blemish is in him; that he profane not my holy places; for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.

24And Moses spoke to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel.

Restrictions against the Unclean

22:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2Speak to Aaron and to his sons, that they keep separate from the holy things of the sons of Israel, which they sanctify to me, and that they profane not my holy name: I am the LORD.

3Say to them: Throughout your generations, any man from all your seed who approaches the holy things, which the sons of Israel sanctify to the LORD, with his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from before me: I am the LORD.

4Any man from the seed of Aaron who is leprous or has a discharge, of the holy things he shall not eat until he is clean. And the one who touches anyone unclean by a soul, or a man from whom goes out an emission of seed; 5or a man who touches any swarming thing by which he is made unclean, or a man by whom he is made unclean, for any of his uncleanness; 6a soul who touches it shall be unclean before(ad עד) the evening, and he shall not eat of the holy things unless he washes his flesh in water.

7And when the sun goes down, he shall be clean; and afterward he may eat of the holy things, for it is his bread. 8A carcass or that which is torn he shall not eat, to be defiled by it: I am the LORD. 9And they shall keep my charge, lest they bear sin for it and die by it, because they profane it: I am the LORD who sanctifies them.

10And no stranger shall eat the holy thing; a tenant of a priest, or a hired servant, shall not eat the holy thing. 11But a priest, when he buys a soul, the purchase of his money, he may eat of it; and one born in his house, they may eat of his bread.

12And a priest's daughter, when she becomes a strange man's, she of the heave-offering of the holy things shall not eat. 13But a priest's daughter, when she becomes a widow or divorced, and has no seed, and returns to her father's house, as in her youth, of her father's bread she may eat; but no stranger shall eat of it.

14And a man when he eats a holy thing in error, then he shall add a fifth part of it to it, and shall give to the priest the holy thing. 15And they shall not profane the holy things of the sons of Israel, which they lift up to the LORD; 16and so cause them to bear the iniquity of guilt when they eat their holy things; for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.

Worthy Offerings

22:17And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 18Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel, and say to them: Any man from the house of Israel, or from the sojourner in Israel, who offers his offering for any of their vows or for any of their freewill-offerings, which they offer to the LORD for a burnt-offering; 19for your acceptance, a perfect male, among the cattle, among the sheep, or among the goats. 20Anything in which there is a blemish you shall not offer; for it shall not be for acceptance for you.

21And a man when he offers a sacrifice of peace-offerings to the LORD, to fulfill a vow, or for a freewill-offering, of the herd or of the flock, it shall be perfect to be accepted; no blemish shall be in it. 22Blind, or broken, or maimed, or with a wen, or scab, or scurvy, these you shall not offer to the LORD, and a fire-offering you shall not give from them upon the altar to the LORD.

23And an ox or a sheep with a limb overlong or stunted, a freewill-offering you may make it; but for a vow it shall not be accepted. 24And that which is bruised, or crushed, or torn, or cut you shall not offer to the LORD; and in your land you shall not do this. 25And from the hand of a son of a foreigner you shall not offer the bread of your God from any of these, because their corruption is in them, a blemish is in them; they shall not be accepted for you.

26And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 27An ox, or a sheep, or a goat, when it is born, then it shall be seven days under its mother; and from the eighth day and onward it shall be accepted for an offering, a fire-offering, to the LORD. 28And an ox or a sheep, it and its young you shall not slaughter in one day.

29And when you sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the LORD, for your acceptance you shall sacrifice it. 30On that same day it shall be eaten; you shall not leave any of it until morning: I am the LORD.

31And you shall keep my commandments and do them: I am the LORD. 32And you shall not profane my holy name, but I will be sanctified among the sons of Israel: I am the LORD who sanctifies you, 33the one who brought you out from the land of Egypt, to be for you God: I am the LORD.

Feasts and Shabbats

23:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: The appointed times (moedim) of the LORD, which you shall proclaim them holy convocations, these are My appointed times (moedim).

3Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day is a Shabbat of Shabbaton, a holy convocation; any work you shall not do; it is a Shabbat to the LORD in all your dwellings.

Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread

4These are the appointed times (moedim) of the LORD, holy convocations, which you shall proclaim them in their appointed time (mo-ed). 5In the first month, on the fourteenth of the month, between the evenings, is a Passover to the LORD. 6And on the fifteenth day of this month is the feast of unleavened bread to the LORD; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 7On the first day a holy convocation shall be to you; any work of service you shall not do. 8And you shall bring near a fire-offering to the LORD seven days; on the seventh day is a holy convocation; any work of service you shall not do.

The Sheaf of the Firstfruits

9And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 10Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: When you come into the land which I am giving to you, and you reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest. 11And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD for your acceptance; on the morrow after the Shabbat the priest shall wave it.

12And you shall offer, on the day you wave the sheaf, a lamb without blemish, a son of its year, for a burnt offering to the LORD. 13And its grain offering, two tenths of fine flour mingled with oil, a fire-offering to the LORD, a savor of soothing; and its drink offering, wine, a fourth of the hin.

14And bread and parched grain and fresh ears you shall not eat until this very day, until you have brought the offering of your God; an everlasting statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

The Feast of Weeks

15And you shall count for yourselves from the morrow after the Shabbat, from the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven complete Shabbats they shall be. 16Until the morrow after the seventh Shabbat you shall count fifty days; and you shall bring near a new grain offering to the LORD.

17From your dwellings you shall bring two wave loaves of two tenths; of fine flour they shall be, with leaven they shall be baked, firstfruits to the LORD.

18And you shall bring near with the bread seven lambs without blemish, sons of a year, and one young bull, and two rams; they shall be a burnt offering to the LORD, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, a fire-offering of a savor of soothing to the LORD.

19And you shall make one he-goat of the goats for a sin offering, and two lambs, sons of a year, for a sacrifice of peace offerings. 20And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits, a wave offering before the LORD, with the two lambs; they shall be holy to the LORD for the priest.

21And you shall proclaim on this very day; a holy convocation it shall be to you; any work of service you shall not do; an everlasting statute in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

22And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corner of your field in your reaping, and the gleaning of your harvest you shall not gather; for the poor and for the stranger you shall leave them: I am the LORD your God.

The Feast of Trumpets

23:23And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 24Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: In the seventh month, on the first of the month, shall be to you a Shabbaton, a memorial of trumpet blast, a holy convocation. 25Any work of service you shall not do; and you shall bring near a fire-offering to the LORD.

The Day of Atonement

26And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 27But on the tenth of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement; a holy convocation it shall be to you, and you shall afflict your souls; and you shall bring near a fire-offering to the LORD.

28And any work you shall not do on this very day; for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. 29For every soul that is not afflicted on this very day shall be cut off from its peoples. 30And every soul that does any work on this very day, I will destroy that soul from the midst of its people.

31Any work you shall not do; an everlasting statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32A Shabbat of Shabbaton it is to you, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth of the month in the evening, from evening to evening, you shall shabbat your Shabbat.

The Feast of Tabernacles

23:33And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 34Speak to the sons of Israel, saying: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the feast of booths for seven days to the LORD. 35On the first day is a holy convocation; any work of service you shall not do. 36Seven days you shall bring near a fire-offering to the LORD; on the eighth day a holy convocation it shall be to you, and you shall bring near a fire-offering to the LORD; it is a solemn assembly; any work of service you shall not do.

37These are the appointed times (moedim) of the LORD, which you shall proclaim them holy convocations, to bring near a fire-offering to the LORD, a burnt offering and a grain offering, a sacrifice and drink offerings, the matter of a day on its day; 38besides the Shabbat of the LORD, and besides your gifts, and besides all your vows, and besides all your freewill offerings which you give to the LORD.

39But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather in the produce of the land, you shall keep the feast of the LORD seven days; on the first day is a Shabbaton, and on the eighth day a Shabbaton.

40And you shall take for yourselves on the first day fruit of a majestic tree, fronds of palms, and a branch of a leafy tree, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. 41And you shall keep it a feast to the LORD seven days in the year; an everlasting statute throughout your generations; in the seventh month you shall keep it.

42In booths you shall dwell seven days; every native in Israel shall dwell in booths; 43that your generations may know that I made the sons of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

44And Moses declared the appointed times (moedim) of the LORD to the sons of Israel.

The Oil for the Lamps

24:1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2Command the sons of Israel, that they bring to you pure beaten olive oil for the light, to cause a lamp to go up continually.

3Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), Aaron shall arrange it from evening to morning before the LORD continually; an everlasting statute throughout your generations. 4Upon the pure lampstand he shall arrange the lamps before the LORD continually.

The Showbread

5And you shall take fine flour and bake it, twelve cakes; two tenths shall be in the one cake. 6And you shall set them in two rows, six to the row, upon the pure table before the LORD. 7And you shall put upon the row pure frankincense, and it shall be for the bread a memorial, a fire-offering to the LORD.

8On the Shabbat day, on the Shabbat day, he shall arrange it before the LORD continually; from the sons of Israel, an everlasting covenant. 9And it shall be for Aaron and for his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy to him of the fire-offerings of the LORD, an everlasting statute.

Punishment for Blasphemy

10And the son of an Israelite woman went out, and he was the son of an Egyptian man, in the midst of the sons of Israel; and the son of the Israelite woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp. 11And the son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name and cursed; and they brought him to Moses. And his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.

12And they put him in custody, to declare to them at the mouth of the LORD.

13And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 14Bring out the one who cursed to outside the camp, and let all who heard lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.

15And to the sons of Israel you shall speak, saying: Any man, when he curses his God, shall bear his sin. 16And he who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall surely stone him; as the stranger, so the native, when he blasphemes the Name, he shall be put to death.

An Eye for an Eye

17And a man, when he strikes any soul of man, shall surely be put to death. 18And he who strikes the soul of a beast shall make it good: soul for soul. 19And a man, when he gives a blemish in his neighbor, as he has done, so shall it be done to him: 20breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he gives a blemish in the man, so shall it be given in him.

21And he who strikes a beast shall make it good; and he who strikes a man shall be put to death. 22One judgment shall be for you; as the stranger, so the native it shall be; for I am the LORD your God.

23And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, and they brought out the one who cursed to outside the camp, and stoned him with a stone. And the sons of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Duties of the Priests

44:15But the priests, the Levites, the sons of Zadok, who kept the charge of my sanctuary when the sons of Israel went astray from me, they shall draw near to me to minister to me, and they shall stand before me to offer to me the fat and the blood, declares the Lord GOD. 16They shall enter into my sanctuary, and they shall draw near to my table to minister to me, and they shall keep my charge.

17And it shall be, when they enter the gates of the inner court, they shall wear linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them when they minister in the gates of the inner court and within. 18Linen turbans shall be upon their heads, and linen breeches shall be upon their loins; they shall not gird themselves with sweat.

19And when they go out to the outer court, to the outer court to the people, they shall put off their garments in which they minister, and lay them in the holy chambers; and they shall put on other garments, and they shall not sanctify the people with their garments.

20And their heads they shall not shave, and they shall not let locks grow long; they shall surely trim their heads. 21And no priest shall drink wine when they enter the inner court. 22And a widow and a divorced woman they shall not take for themselves for wives; but virgins of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow who is the widow of a priest, they may take. 23And my people they shall teach the difference between holy and profane, and they shall make them know between the unclean and the clean.

24And over a controversy they shall stand to judge; by my judgments they shall judge it; and my Torah and my statutes in all my appointed times (moedim) they shall keep, and my Shabbat they shall sanctify.

25And to a dead man he shall not come, to defile himself; except for father, or for mother, or for son, or for daughter, for brother, or for sister who has not been to a man, they may defile themselves. 26And after his cleansing, seven days they shall count for him. 27And on the day he enters the holy place, to the inner court, to minister in the holy place, he shall offer his sin offering, declares the Lord GOD.

28And it shall be to them for an inheritance: I am their inheritance; and you shall give them no possession in Israel: I am their possession.

29The grain offering and the sin offering and the guilt offering, they shall eat them; and every devoted thing in Israel shall be theirs. 30And the first of all the firstfruits of everything, and every heave offering of everything, of all your heave offerings, shall be for the priests; and the first of your dough you shall give to the priest, to cause a blessing to rest upon your house. 31Any carcass or torn thing, of bird or of beast, the priests shall not eat.
