The First Census of Israel

1:1And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), on the first of the second month, in the second year of their going out from the land of Egypt, saying: 2"Lift up the head of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, every male, head by head;

3from twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the host in Israel, you shall number them by their hosts, you and Aaron. 4And with you there shall be a man for each tribe, a man who is head of the house of his fathers.

The Leaders of the Tribes

5And these are the names of the men who shall stand with you: For Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur.

6For Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

7For Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

8For Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar.

9For Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon.

10For the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

11For Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni.

12For Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

13For Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran.

14For Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

15For Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan."

16These were the called ones of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

The Number of Every Tribe

17And Moses and Aaron took these men who were designated by names. 18And they assembled all the congregation on the first of the second month, and they declared their births by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head. 19As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

The Exemption of the Levites

47But the Levites, by the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them. 48And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 49"Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, and their head you shall not lift up among the sons of Israel; 50but you, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its vessels, and over all that belongs to it; they shall bear the tabernacle and all its vessels, and they shall minister to it, and around the tabernacle they shall encamp.

51And in the journeying of the tabernacle, the Levites shall take it down; and in the encamping of the tabernacle, the Levites shall set it up; and the stranger who draws near shall be put to death.

52And the sons of Israel shall encamp, each man by his camp, and each man by his standard, by their hosts. 53But the Levites shall encamp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony."

The Sons of Aaron

3:1And these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spoke with Moses in mount Sinai.

2And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whose hand he filled to act as priests.

4And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they brought near strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons; and Eleazar and Ithamar acted as priests upon the face of Aaron their father.

The Duties of the Levites

5And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 6Bring near the tribe of Levi, and you shall make it stand before Aaron the priest, and they shall minister to him. 7And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of all the congregation, before the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), to serve the service of the tabernacle. 8And they shall keep all the vessels of the tent of appointed time (mo-ed), and the charge of the sons of Israel, to serve the service of the tabernacle.

9And you shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; wholly given are they to him from the sons of Israel. 10And Aaron and his sons you shall appoint, and they shall keep their priesthood; and the stranger who draws near shall be put to death.

11And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 12And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from the midst of the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn that opens the womb among the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall be Mine. 13For Mine is every firstborn; in the day I struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified to Me every firstborn in Israel, from man to beast; Mine they shall be. I am the LORD.

The Redemption of the Firstborn

3:40And the LORD said to Moses: Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. 41And you shall take the Levites for Me — I am the LORD — instead of every firstborn among the sons of Israel; and the beast of the Levites instead of every firstborn among the beast of the sons of Israel.

42And Moses numbered, as the LORD commanded him, every firstborn among the sons of Israel. 43And every firstborn male, by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those numbered of them, were two and twenty thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

44And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 45Take the Levites instead of every firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the beast of the Levites instead of their beast; and the Levites shall be Mine. I am the LORD. 46And for the redemption of the two hundred and seventy-three, those of the firstborn of the sons of Israel that are over and above the Levites, 47you shall take five shekels apiece by the head; by the shekel of the sanctuary you shall take, twenty gerahs the shekel. 48And you shall give the money to Aaron and to his sons, the redemption of those over and above among them.

49And Moses took the redemption money from those over and above the redeemed of the Levites; 50from the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money: a thousand three hundred and sixty-five by the shekel of the sanctuary. 51And Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons, according to the mouth of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Duties of the Kohathites

4:1And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: 2Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from the midst of the sons of Levi, by their families, by the house of their fathers, 3from a son of thirty years and upward even to a son of fifty years, everyone who enters the host to do work in the tent of appointed time (mo-ed).

4This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of appointed time (mo-ed): the holy of holies. 5And Aaron and his sons shall come in, when the camp sets out, and they shall take down the veil of the screen, and cover with it the ark of the testimony; 6and they shall put on it a covering of tachash skin, and shall spread a cloth wholly of blue above, and shall set its poles.

7And on the table of the presence they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put on it the dishes, and the pans, and the bowls, and the jars of the drink offering; and the continual bread shall be on it. 8And they shall spread over them a scarlet cloth, and cover it with a covering of tachash skin, and shall set its poles.

9And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the lampstand of the light, and its lamps, and its tongs, and its snuff dishes, and all the vessels of its oil with which they minister to it. 10And they shall put it and all its vessels into a covering of tachash skin, and shall put it on the bar.

11And on the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of tachash skin, and shall set its poles. 12And they shall take all the vessels of ministry with which they minister in the sanctuary, and put them into a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of tachash skin, and put them on the bar.

13And they shall remove the ashes from the altar, and spread on it a cloth of purple; 14and they shall put on it all its vessels with which they minister on it: the fire-pans, the flesh-hooks, and the shovels, and the basins, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread on it a covering of tachash skin, and set its poles.

15And Aaron and his sons shall finish covering the holy thing and all the vessels of the holy place, when the camp sets out; and after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; but they shall not touch the holy thing, lest they die. These are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of appointed time (mo-ed).

16And the oversight of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest: the oil of the light, and the incense of the spices, and the continual grain offering, and the anointing oil — the oversight of all the tabernacle and all that is in it, of the holy place and its vessels.

17And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: 18Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathite from the midst of the Levites; 19but this do for them, that they may live and not die, when they draw near to the holy of holies: Aaron and his sons shall come in and appoint them each man, each man, to his service and to his burden; 20but they shall not come in to see the holy thing being swallowed up, lest they die.

Prophets (Haftarah) Hosea 2:1–22

PHosea 2:1–22Chapter page with footnotes →

2:1And the number of the sons of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which is not measured and not counted; and it shall be, in the place where it was said to them, "You are not my people," it shall be said to them, "Sons of the living God." 2And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head, and they shall go up from the land, for great is the day of Jezreel.

Israel’s Adultery Rebuked

3Say to your brothers, "My people," and to your sisters, "Compassioned."

4Plead with your mother, plead, for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband; and let her remove her harlotries from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts;

5lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day she was born, and make her like the wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.

6And on her children I will not have compassion, for they are children of harlotries.

7For their mother has played the harlot; she who conceived them has acted shamefully; for she said, "I will go after my lovers, who give my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink."

8Therefore, behold, I am hedging up your way with thorns, and I will wall up her wall, and her paths she shall not find.

9And she shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but not find; and she shall say, "I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now."

10And she did not know that I gave to her the grain, and the new wine, and the fresh oil, and silver I multiplied to her, and gold — they made for Baal.

11Therefore I will return and take my grain in its time, and my new wine in its appointed time (mo-ed), and I will snatch away my wool and my flax meant to cover her nakedness.

12And now I will uncover her shame before the eyes of her lovers, and no man shall deliver her from my hand.

13And I will make to cease all her mirth, her feast, her new moon, and her Shabbat, and all her appointed times (moedim).

14And I will lay waste her vine and her fig tree, of which she said, "These are my hire that my lovers gave me"; and I will make them a forest, and the beast of the field shall eat them.

15And I will visit upon her the days of the Baalim, to whom she burned incense, and she adorned herself with her ring and her jewelry, and went after her lovers; and me she forgot — declaration of the LORD.

God’s Mercy to Israel

16Therefore, behold, I am alluring her, and I will lead her into the wilderness, and I will speak to her heart.

17And I will give to her her vineyards from there, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she shall answer there as in the days of her youth, and as in the day of her coming up from the land of Egypt.

18And it shall be in that day — declaration of the LORD — you shall call me "my husband," and you shall no more call me "my Baal."

19And I will remove the names of the Baalim from her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name.

20And I will cut for them a covenant in that day with the beast of the field, and with the bird of the heavens, and the creeping thing of the ground; and bow and sword and battle I will break from the land, and I will make them lie down in safety.

21And I will betroth you to me forever; and I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in judgment, and in mercy and in compassion.

22And I will betroth you to me in faithfulness, and you shall know the LORD.
