Psalms 39

1To the leader, to Jeduthun, a psalm of David.

2I said, "I will guard my ways from sinning with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked is before me."

3I was mute in silence; I kept still from good, and my pain was stirred.

4My heart grew hot within me; in my musing a fire burned; I spoke with my tongue:

5"YHWH, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; let me know how fleeting I am.

6Behold, you have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you; surely every man (adam) standing firm is altogether vanity. Selah.

7Surely as a shadow man (ish) walks about; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heaps up and does not know who will gather them.

8And now, what do I wait for, my Lord (Adonai)? My hope, it is in you.

9From all my transgressions deliver me; do not make me the reproach of the fool.

10I am mute, I do not open my mouth, because you have done it.

11Remove your stroke from upon me; by the blow of your hand I am consumed.

12With rebukes for iniquity you chasten man (ish), and you make his desirable things melt away like a moth; surely every man (adam) is vanity. Selah.

13Hear my prayer, YHWH, and give ear to my cry; do not be silent at my tears; for I am a stranger with you, a sojourner like all my fathers.

14Look away from me, that I may be cheered, before I go and am no more."
