First-year reading plan

Do not spend time deciding what to read. Follow this as it stands and a year is filled.

Why begin with John

Start reading in order from Genesis and you will usually stop somewhere in Leviticus. People gathering for the first time need first of all to know who Yeshua is. John is a book written holding on to that one question, and it says so from its opening sentence.

Acts comes next — there you find what the people who met that Yeshua did from house to house. You will see that what we are trying to do now is not something newly invented.

1–11	John 1–21	Who is Yeshua. Two chapters a week.
12–20	Acts 1–28	What the first disciples did from house to house. Three chapters a week.
21–28	Romans 1–16	Why grace. Two chapters a week.
29–36	Genesis 1–25	Where the covenant begins. Three chapters a week.
37–43	Genesis 26–50	Jacob and Joseph. How God works.
44–49	Matthew 1–28	The Messiah who came as king. Five chapters a week.
50–52	1 John · Philippians	What it is to love one another. The year closes here.

If it is hard to keep up, cut it down. One chapter a week is fine. What matters is not the quantity but that the table is set at the same hour every week. If keeping pace turns the gathering into a burden, the order has been reversed.

During the week between gatherings

If each person reads the passage once more before the next gathering, the sharing goes deeper. If there is no time to read, listening on the commute is fine — a chapter fits easily.

Listening is only for preparing alone. In the gathering no recording is played; it is read in the voices of the saints — see how an evening runs. Note also that the audiobooks are currently in English only.

This book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall prosper.

From the second year

Once the first year is finished a gathering can decide the next for itself. You might go into the prophets of the Old Testament, or read one book slowly, digging into the original language. Reading one of the Bible studies together at a time also makes a year.
